In addition to the computer software and hardware trends that will impact chemical-scientific database systems in the future, trends in chemistry will also impact them. The disciplines of genetic engineering and polymer chemistry have special needs for chemical database technology, as do computational chemistry and patent applications. The chemical/pharmaceutical industry will enjoy important gains in productivity when these needs are better provided for. 

Once precision data have been generated, they should be summarily compiled to determine the average, standard, and %RSD or coefficient of variation (CV) values. Intermediate precision data can also be used to initially populate assay trending databases if the method will be used routinely in the future. 

An important aspect of this new approach is the expectation that pharmaceutical and healthcare companies will implement any corrective actions identified as the result of a site inspection across the whole of their operations. Effective coordination of corrective actions is vital for large multinational organizations. An example form that might be used to collate computer validation inspection history is presented in Table 16.1. The FDA and MHRA already have access to inspection databases and have the ability to readily trend data and track repeated offences on particular topics across multiple sites in a firm s organization. Indeed, regulatory authorities may in the future share inspection findings with the MRA parmer regulatory authorities. 

Despite the condensed format of this overview, I hope that it manages to convince readers that the interest in monomers from renewable resources is not a passing whim of some polymer chemists led astray by fashionable trends, but, instead, a very sound strategy that should help to shape the future of polymer science and technology. Although obviously not all these studies will reach viable practical realizations in terms of novel macromolecular materials, it is indispensable to build a rich database in preparation for the progressive dwindling of fossil...

A key topic for debate in the near future will be the acceptability of "freeware" software products distributed via the World Wide Web at no cost to the user. The problem with freeware is that it often comes with little or no development documentation and, as such, has an unknown development history. Freeware distributed by what might appear as an altruistic individual may not be what it seems. Before using freeware, a pharmaceutical manufacturer must ensure it does not have any viruses or Trojan horses embedded in it, or that "back doors" exist that hackers could open. Freeware may also be distributed as part of a supplier s marketing ploy. The idea is that users will become familiar with using certain free software packages (e.g., spreadsheets and databases) from a particular supplier and then follow up with purchases from this supplier when other software products are required. This seems set as a new trend in software marketing and includes the provision of electronic services... 

Abstract This chapter describes the surveillance database of the Western pressurized water reactor (PWR) reactor pressure vessel (RPV) beltline materials obtained from US, French and Japanese nuclear power plants (NPPs) and those from other countries, together with an overview of the characteristics of PWR RPVs. Trends of surveillance data which will be obtained in the near future and the possibility of new data from reconstituted and miniature specimen techniques are presented.
