Cyclamic acid

Cyclamate. Sodium cyclamate [139-05-9] (6), the sodium salt of cyclamic acid [100-88-9] was so widely used that it was often just called cyclamate. The other common salt, calcium cyclamate [139-06-0] is useful in low sodium diets. [Pg.277]

Its freely water-soluble calcium salt (patented 1957) was a much-used and very effective sweetener, as was the sodium salt, whose sweetness was first noted in 1937 cyclamic acid is ineffective as it is essentially insoluble in aqueous media. [Pg.330]

Cyclamate. Group name for synthetic, nonnutritive sweeteners derived from cyclohexylamine or cyclamic acid. The senes includes sodium, potassium, and calcium cydamates. Cyclamates occur as white crystals, or as white crystalline powders. They are odorless and in dilute solution are about 30 times as sweet as sucrose. The purity of commercially available compounds is approximately 98%. [Pg.1589]

Cyclamic acid. Cyclamic acids in the form of cyclamate salts were in wide use in the 1965-75 period but because of a sudden scare that they could be a cause of certain cancers were removed from the marketplace. Cyclamates were re-permitted on a limited basis in Europe in around 1995 but have found little commercial use since then. [Pg.137]

Saccharin or its sodium and calcium salts are used as sweeteners. Aspartame is also employed as a sweetener in effervescent tablets. Earlier, cyclamates and cyclamic acid were the artificial sweeteners of choice, but their use has now been restricted. [Pg.1460]

The WHO has set an estimated acceptable daily intake for sodium and calcium cyclamate, expressed as cyclamic acid, at up to llmg/kg body-weight. In Europe, a temporary acceptable daily intake for sodium and calcium cyclamate, expressed as cyclamic acid, has been set at up to 1.5mg/kg body-weight. [Pg.679]

Cyclamic acid is made by the sulfonation of cyclohexyl-amine. Cyclohexylamine is a six-carbon ring compound with a single amine (NH2) group attached to it. Its formula is CeHuNH. Sulfonation is the process by which an -S02 group is added to a compound. Sulfonation of cyclohexylamine is accomplished with either sulfur dioxide (S02) or sulfamic acid (H0S02NH2). [Pg.743]
