Lead alloyed with silver shows excellent resistance to sulfuric acid. The addition of 1 % Ag pixxluces alloy bars, extraded or cast, that are the excellent insoluble anodes with very good corrosion resistance over a wide range of current densities. Alloys with 1.5 % Ag and 1 % Sn are used as solders with high melting point [3]. [Pg.532]

Much attention, particularly among the Russian workers, has been given to the applicability of the Heyrovsky-Ilkovic versus the Kolthoff-Lingane equation for electrode reactions involving metal deposition. In practice, one plots the electrode potential versus log[(/i — /)//] or log(/ — i) and examines the linearity of the plot and also the value of the slope (theoretically 2.3RTjnF). It is expected that the Heyrovsky-Ilkovic equation should be applicable when alloy formation with the electrode material takes place and the metal formed diffuses away from the surface so that its surface activity is a function of the current density. Alloying and diffusion in the electrode will be functions of the metal deposited, electrode material, temperature, and the rate of deposition (current density) therefore, comparison is difficult or meaningless if several of these variables are varied simultaneously. [Pg.201]

The Fe, Co, and Ni deposits are extremely fine grained at high current density and pH. The first semiconductor lasers, fabricated from gallium arsenide material, were formed from a simple junction (called a homojunction because the composition of the material was the same on each side of the junction) between the type and n-ty e materials. Hard plating is noted for its excellent hardness, wear resistance, and low coefficient of friction. Asahi also reports an undivided cell process employing a lead alloy cathode, a nickel—steel anode, and an electrolyte composed of an emulsion of 20 wt % of an oil phase and 80 wt % of an aqueous phase (125). The aqueous phase is 10 wt % K HPO, 3 wt % K B O, and 2 wt % (C2H (C4H )2N)2HP04. The oil phase is about 28 wt % acrylonitrile and 50 wt % adiponitrile. The balance of the oil phase consists of by-products and water. The cell operates at a current density of 20 A/dm at 50°C. Circulated across the cathode surface at a superficial velocity of 1.5 m/s is the electrolyte. A 91% selectivity to adiponitrile is claimed at a current efficiency of 90%. The alloy niobium titanium (NbTi) and the intermetaUic compound of niobium and tin (Nb.3 Sn) are the most technologically advanced LTS materials presently available. Even though NbTi has a lower critical field and critical current density, it is often selected because its metallurgical properties favor convenient wire fabrication. The ease with which stainless steels can passivate then increases with the level of chromium within the alloy and so materials with higher chromium content are more passive (i.e. conduct a lower passive current density) and passivate more readily (i.e. the critical current density is lower and the active/passive transition is lower in potential). Stress-corrosion cracking based on active-path corrosion of amorphous alloys has so far only been found when alloys of very low corrosion resistance are corroded under very high applied stresses .
