Curcumin cancer chemopreventive potential

There is growing evidence that dietary curcumin possesses chemopreventive potential against mammary cancer. Dietary administration of 1% turmeric or 0.5% eth-anolic extract of turmeric inhibited DMBA-induced mammary carcinogenesis during the initiation as well as the postinitiation phase of carcinogenesis. Singletary... [Pg.184]

Recently, Youssef et al. [24] reported the synthesis of curcumin analogs as potential antioxidant and cancer chemopreventive agents. The general structures of the synthesized analogs are shown in Fig. (8). These compounds were tested for scavenging ability of DPPH free radicals and in an ATP chemiluminescence assay. The SAR conclusions from the results were mainly consistent with the prior conclusions drawn by other researchers. In addition, they found that di-substitution of the central methylene group resulted in decreased antioxidative activity. [Pg.795]

Nanoformulated nutraceuticals such as polyphenols and fiavanoids, which are derived from medicinal plants, provide a new insight for cancer treatment. The mechanism of action of these dietary agents in chemoprevention has gained considerable interest in the area of cancer research. This review has presented several mechanisms explaining the chemopreventive potentials of curcumin, EGCG, resveratrol, saponin, silymarin, and GSE. Their ability to target specific... [Pg.232]

Another area of research focuses on the chemopreventive properties of curcumin against prostate cancer. Curcumin decreased the proliferative potential and induced apoptosis in both androgen-dependent and androgen-independent prostate cancer cells in Dietary administration of 2% curcumin also caused a marked... [Pg.186]
