By avoiding the use of a conventional heat exchanger, a DCC crystallizer avoids the troublesome problems associated with encrustation on heat transfer surfaces (section 9.5). The coolant in a DCC process can be a solid, liquid or gas, and heat is extracted by the transfer of sensible and/or latent heat (vaporization or sublimation). [Pg.376]

For jet fuels, the elimination of free water using filters and coalescers by purging during storage, and the limit of 5 ppm dissolved water are sufficient to avoid incidents potentially attributable to water contamination formation of micro-crystals of ice at low temperature, increased risk of corrosion, growth of micro-organisms. [Pg.250]

Extended defects range from well characterized dislocations to grain boundaries, interfaces, stacking faults, etch pits, D-defects, misfit dislocations (common in epitaxial growth), blisters induced by H or He implantation etc. Microscopic studies of such defects are very difficult, and crystal growers use years of experience and trial-and-error teclmiques to avoid or control them. Some extended defects can change in unpredictable ways upon heat treatments. Others become gettering centres for transition metals, a phenomenon which can be desirable or not, but is always difficult to control. Extended defects are sometimes cleverly used. For example, the smart-cut process relies on the controlled implantation of H followed by heat treatments to create blisters. This allows a thin layer of clean material to be lifted from a bulk wafer [261. [Pg.2885]

In periodic boimdary conditions, one possible way to avoid truncation of electrostatic interaction is to apply the so-called Particle Mesh Ewald (PME) method, which follows the Ewald summation method of calculating the electrostatic energy for a number of charges [27]. It was first devised by Ewald in 1921 to study the energetics of ionic crystals [28]. PME has been widely used for highly polar or charged systems. York and Darden applied the PME method already in 1994 to simulate a crystal of the bovine pancreatic trypsin inhibitor (BPTI) by molecular dynamics [29]. [Pg.369]

For purification, transfer the acid to a 150 ml. flask containing 60 ml. of water, boil the mixture under reflux, and then add acetic acid in 5 ml. portions down the condenser until almost all the solid has dissolved avoid an excess of acetic acid by ensuring that the solvent action of each addition is complete before the next portion is added. A small suspension of insoluble impurity may remain. Add 2 g. of animal charcoal, boil the solution again for 10-15 minutes, and then filter it through a preheated Buchner funnel. Cool and stir the filtrate, which will deposit pale cream-coloured crystals of the acid. Collect as before and if necessary repeat the recrystallisation. Dissolve 8 8 g. (9 0 ml.) of cyclohexanone in 50 ml. of glacial acetic acid, add 8 ml. of phenylhydrazine, and boil the solution under reflux for 5 minutes. Cool the solution, when the tetrahydrocarbazole will crystallise out. Filter at the pump, drain well, and recrystallise either from aqueous ethanol or (better) from aqueous acetic acid. The recrystallisation should be performed rapidly, for the tetrahydrocarbazole undergoes atmO" spheric oxidation in hot solutions after recrystallisation, the compound should be dried in a vacuum desiccator and not in an oven. Repeated recrystallisation should be avoided. The tetrahydrocarbazole, after thorough drying, is obtained as colourless crystals, m.p. 118° yield of recrystallised material, 11 g. [Pg.295]

Both bromides have skjn-irritant and lachrymatory properties therefore keep the crystals or their solutions from the skin and avoid inhaling the vapour of hot solutions, or of mixtures in hot water. [Pg.349]

Make a concentrated solution of anthracene in hot acetone. To about 2 ml. of this solution add a cold concentrated acetone solution of picric acid drop by drop, and note the formation of a red coloration which becomes deeper on further addition of the acid. If excess of picric acid is added, however, the solution becomes paler in colour, and this is to be avoided if possible. Boil to ensure that both components are in solution and then transfer to a small porcelain basin or watch-glass ruby-red crystals of anthracene picrate separate out on cooling. The product, however, is often contaminated with an excess of either anthracene or of picric acid, which appear as yellowish crystals. [Pg.394]

The separation of the solid phase does not occur readily with some liquid mixtures and supercooling is observed. Instead of an arrest in the cooling curve at /, the cooling continues along a continuation of c/ and then rises suddenly to meet the line f g which it subsequently follows (Fig. 1,13, 1, iii). The correct freezing point may be obtained by extrapolation of the two parts of the curve (as shown by the dotted line). To avoid supercooling, a few small crystals of the substance which should separate may be added (the process is called seeding ) these act as nuclei for crystallisation. [Pg.27]

Cuprous cyanide solution. The most satisfactory method is to dissolve the cuprous cyanide (1 mol) in a solution of technical sodium cyanide (2 5-2-6 mols in 600 ml. of water). If it is desired to avoid the preparation of solid cuprous cyanide, the following procedure may be adopted. Cuprous chloride, prepared from 125 g. of copper sulphate crystals as described under 1 above, is suspended in 200 ml. of water contained in a 1-litre round-bottomed flask, which is fitted with a mechanical stirrer. A solution of 65 g. of technical sodium cyanide (96-98 per cent.) in 100 ml. of water is added and the mixture is stirred. The cuprous chloride passes into solution with considerable evolution of heat. As the cuprous cyanide is usually emplo3 ed in some modification of the diazo reaction, it is usual to cool the resulting solution in ice. [Pg.192]

Aqueous solutions of 50% acrylamide should be kept between 15.5 and 38°C with a maximum of 49°C. Below 14.5°C acrylamide crystallizes from solution and separates from the inhibitor. Above 50°C the rate of polymer buildup becomes significant. Suitable materials of constmction for containers include stainless steel (304 and 316) and steel lined with plastic resin (polypropylene, phenoHc, or epoxy). Avoid contact with copper, aluminum, their alloys, or ordinary iron and steel. [Pg.136]

A typical flow diagram for pentaerythritol production is shown in Figure 2. The main concern in mixing is to avoid loss of temperature control in this exothermic reaction, which can lead to excessive by-product formation and/or reduced yields of pentaerythritol (55,58,59). The reaction time depends on the reaction temperature and may vary from about 0.5 to 4 h at final temperatures of about 65 and 35°C, respectively. The reactor product, neutralized with acetic or formic acid, is then stripped of excess formaldehyde and water to produce a highly concentrated solution of pentaerythritol reaction products. This is then cooled under carefully controlled crystallization conditions so that the crystals can be readily separated from the Hquors by subsequent filtration. [Pg.465]

The same reactants are used for manufacture as for sodium fluoride. An excess of acid is required to crystallize the bifluoride. The crystals are dewatered, dried, sized, and packaged.
