Crushing, selective particle size packing or hydraulic compaction can be used to reduce interparticle void space and increase the bulk density within the storage tank to approach the particle density of the carbon. Even with these extreme methods of packing, the fraction of the vessel which is micropore is never greater than 0.50 for any commercial carbon, considerably short of the 0.70 which is necessary for 170 V/V storage. [Pg.289]

Absorption Field A system of properly sized and constructed narrow trenches partially filled with a bed of washed gravel or crushed stone into which perforated or open joint pipe is placed. The discharge from the septic tank is distributed through these pipes into trenches and surrounding soil. Na nitrate occurs native in large deposits in the rainless districts of Chile, hence it is often called Chile saltpeter or Chile niter . The Na nitrate in the deposits constitutes from 20 to 50% in a distinct stratum of earth known as caliche . The caliche is crushed and lixiviated in large tanks of w heated by steam. The settled soln is run off to crystallizers, where crude nitrate separates, the mother liquors being run back to the lixiviators. A. Sodium hypochlorite solution. A solution of sodium hypochlorite 2 is prepared immediately before it is to be used. A mixture of 50 g. (1.25 moles) of sodium hydroxide and 200 ml. of water is swirled until the solid dissolves. The solution is cooled to 0°, and 100 g. of crushed ice is added. The flask is then placed in an ice bath, and chlorine gas from a tank is bubbled through the solution until 41 g. (0.58 mole) is absorbed. An excess of chlorine should be avoided. The solution of sodium hypochlorite is kept in the dark at 0° until needed. [Pg.59]

The first step of the process is performed in a separate, dedicated building. The drums of arsenic trioxide are opened in an air-evacuated chamber and automatically dumped into 50% caustic soda. A dust collection system is used. The drums are carefully washed with water, the washwater is added to the reaction mixture, and the dmms are crushed and sold as scrap metal. The intermediate sodium arsenite is obtained as a 25% solution and is stored in large tanks prior to further reaction. In the next step, the 25% sodium arsenite is treated with methyl chloride to produce the disodium salt DSMA (disodium methanearsenate, hexahydrate). This DSMA can be sold as a herbicide however, it is more generally converted to MSMA, which has more favorable application properties [8]. [Pg.505]

Immediate filtration is the procedure of choice in separating the new wine from its fermentation lees. Unfortunately, the vast volumes of new wine produced during the relatively short grape crushing period, which is rarely more than 10 weeks during the fall, may not permit the timely filtration of all new wine as soon as fermentation is completed. Most new wines are pumped out of their fermentation vessels into holding tanks and allowed to settle their gross lees and yeast for a few days before they are racked (or decanted). [Pg.128]

In a 3-I. round-bottom flask are placed 1200 g. of bromine, 500 cc. of water, and 1500 g. of crushed ice. The principal source of zinc is zinc sulfide or zinc blende. This ore occurs mainly in Australia, Canada and the US. The zinc ore is first concentrated by a process called froth flotation. The crushed ore is fed into tanks of water containing a chemical frothing agent. Air is blown through so that the whole mixture froths up. The rock particles become soaked with water and sink to the bottom of the tank. However, the zinc sulfide particles, into which the water cannot soak, are carried to the top of the tank by the air bubbles and are skimmed off and dried. This ore now contains 55-75% of zinc sulfide. The zinc sulfide is then heated very strongly in a current of air in a furnace (Figure 10.16) to convert it to the oxide ... [Pg.171]
