Crude oil prospecting

As the world s known crude oil reserves diminish, we are confronted with the prospect of treating progressively less desirable crude oils. These materials contain high levels (typically several percent) of organic sulfur and nitrogen, as well as organically complexed vanadium and nickel at the level of... [Pg.94]

Of particnlar significance in the study of petroleum weathering are the biomarker molecules (e.g., pristane, phytane, the hopanes and steranes). Historically, the biomarkers have been employed as crude oil signatures in prospecting and characterization. More recently, such molecules have also been employed in the environmental field, both for the determination of pollutant source and estimation of the degree of weathering. [Pg.229]

Crude oil prices have been pushed by healthy demand led by China, which has outstripped new supply. Political concerns about the stability of the Middle East have combined with this tight supply-demand balance to enable the OPEC cartel to keep control of world oil pricing at a higher level than forecasted as recently as 2002. While a full examination of crude market prospects is beyond the scope of this chapter, the long-term outlook is for OPEC to continue to hold crude oil prices above USD 30/bbl due to the revenue needs of major OPEC member countries. At the same time, the expectation is for oil prices to continue to exhibit considerable volatility around that price. [Pg.202]

The prospect of early depletion of world crude oil reserves with accompanying rapid escalation of world oil prices, so that growing dependence on oil imports would not, in any event, be practical. [Pg.217]

The next problem is investment. To build a refinery requires a massive investment of capital. In the past, refinery profits have been sporadic and profit margins have often been low. The prospect of low or no profits doesn t encourage investment. However, today s environment of high demand and tight supply points to steady profitability. However, that profitability is compromised when some refiners don t produce enough of their own crude oil to refine and must buy it at widely fluctuating prices. [Pg.43]

The application of modem technologies for prospecting, developing and operating petroleum wells has essentially reduced financial expenses for these needs (approximately 40%). This scenario has also resulted in the increase of petroleum export and a decrease in the price of crude oil. The planned increase in the volume of petroleum extraction will be twelve million barrels per day in 2005, from which the part for OPEC is nine million barrels per day, and the part for other countries is about three million barrels per day. After 2005 it is predicted that there will be recession of oil manufacture in the so-called independent exporters States. [Pg.193]

The following chapter describes a novel process developed by Biofine based on thermochemical conversion of cellulosic biomass to value-added fuels and chemicals. The technology has the potential to be economically competitive with existing crude oil based refining. Its commercial application offers the prospect of an economically viable fuels and chemicals industry based on domestically grown raw materials. [Pg.272]
