The final 15 predictors of the construct sample multiple regression equation resulted in a multiple R = 0.59 which subsequently shrank to an R = 0.47 upon cross-validation. None of the simulator event variables had even marginal significance and were excluded, therefore, from the final regression equation. The concurrent prediction equation correctly classified 68.9% of the accident-free drivers and 71.2% of the accident repeaters. This was approximately 20% better than chance prediction. Because of the contrasted criterion group design, however, these validities were overestimates of what would be attained on a normal population of drivers. Results on biographical data and psychomotor functions are listed in Tab 5.15. [Pg.145]

The flash point of a petroleum liquid is the temperature to which it must be brought so that the vapor evolved burns spontaneously in the presence of a flame. For diesel fuel, the test is conducted according to a closed cup technique (NF T 60-103). The French specifications stipulate that the flash point should be between 55°C and 120°C. That constitutes a safety criterion during storage and distribution operations. Moreover, from an official viewpoint, petroleum products are classified in several groups according to their flash points which should never be exceeded. [Pg.249]

H-nmr chemical shifts of N-1—H and N-3—H signals have been used as a criterion for distinguishing between N-l-substituted and N-3-substituted hydantoin derivatives (22). They can often be related to electronic properties, and thus good linear correlations have been found between the shifts of N—H and Hammett parameters of the substituents attached to the aryl group of 5-arylmethylenehydantoins (23). [Pg.250]

In group (a) pipe/soil potentials are evaluated. Here the explanations in the first half of Section 3.3.1 and criterion No. 1 in Table 3-1 are relevant. If the protection criterion is not fulfilled > U, the cause must be found and remedied (e.g., removing foreign contacts, repairing major holidays or increasing the protection current). [Pg.132]

All the well-characterized proteinases belong to one or other of four families serine, cysteine, aspartic, or metallo proteinases. This classification is based on a functional criterion, namely, the nature of the most prominent functional group in the active site. Members of the same functional family are usually evolutionarily related, but there are exceptions to this rule. We... [Pg.205]

Multiple bonds are revealed clearly by anisotropic effects. Textbook examples include alkynes, shielded along the C=C triple bond, and alkenes and carbonyl compounds, where the nuclei are deshielded in the plane of the C=C and C=0 double bonds, respectively One criterion for distinguishing methyl groups attached to the double bond of pulegone (31), for example, is the carbonyl anisotropic effect. [Pg.58]

It should be noted that, whereas ferroelectrics are necessarily piezoelectrics, the converse need not apply. The necessary condition for a crystal to be piezoelectric is that it must lack a centre of inversion symmetry. Of the 32 point groups, 20 qualify for piezoelectricity on this criterion, but for ferroelectric behaviour a further criterion is required (the possession of a single non-equivalent direction) and only 10 space groups meet this additional requirement. An example of a crystal that is piezoelectric but not ferroelectric is quartz, and ind this is a particularly important example since the use of quartz for oscillator stabilization has permitted the development of extremely accurate clocks (I in 10 ) and has also made possible the whole of modern radio and television broadcasting including mobile radio communications with aircraft and ground vehicles. [Pg.58]

In the course of the investigation of methodologies for the protection of iodopy-razoles during acetylenic cross-coupling, different authors have been seeking protecting groups that satisfy the criterion that both protection and deprotection occur efficiently under mild conditions. [Pg.29]

One of the most important characteristics of the emulsifier is its CMC, which is defined as the critical concentration value below which no micelle formation occurs. The critical micelle concentration of an emulsifier is determined by the structure and the number of hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups included in the emulsifier molecule. The hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB) number is a good criterion for the selection of proper emulsifier. The HLB scale was developed by W. C. Griffin [46,47]. Based on his approach, the HLB number of an emulsifier can be calculated by dividing... [Pg.196]

Appreciable property differences appear between crude oils as a result of the variable ratios of the crude oil components. For a refiner dealing with crudes of different origins, a simple criterion may be established to group crudes with similar characteristics. Crude oils can be arbitrarily classified into three or four groups depending on the relative ratio of the hydrocarbon classes that predominates in the mixture. The following describes three types of crudes ... [Pg.21]

The most suitable way to organize the different metallic negatives in groups seems to be by a combination of these three classifications, using one as the main criterion and the others to create subdivisions. Such a system is demonstrated in the following example ... [Pg.195]

Similarly, only selected cyclic systems containing more than one sulfoxide or sulfone groups have been included and discussed here, primarily in the thietane (i.e. 1,2- and 1,3-dithietanes) and thiane (i.e. 1,2-, 1,3- and 1,4-dithianes) series. The criterion for the inclusion of these multifunctional heterocycles was their contribution to the understanding of the physical properties and chemical reactivity of cyclic sulfones and sulfoxides, and the effects of these groups on either their immediate vicinity or on the behavior of the whole molecule. [Pg.383]
