Another alternative surface pretreatment method, which can enhance diamond nucleation and avert surface damage, is covering or coating substrate surfaces with overlayers. The overlayers may involve graphite fibers, clusters, or films, thin films of met- 

Coating substrates with a thin film of metals, such as Fe, Cu, Ti, Nb, Mo, or Ni, has been used to enhance diamond nucleation. 

Diamond nucleation on FeSi2 substrates in HFCVD was enhanced by more than an order of magnitude relative to that on a bare Si substrate, as reported by Godbole and Narayan. 1 The FeSi2 was formed by laser deposition of Fe on Si substrates, followed by alloying during thermal annealing at 700°C. 

To enhance diamond nucleation by covering/coating substrate surfaces with carbon overlayers, several conditions are necessary  

A structured, pure carbon source on the sur ce is necessary to act as a diamond seed, which must be more thermodynamically stable than any hydrocarbon molecules under the typical diamond CVD conditions.

For structures and components performing the function of confinement, coverings and coatings shall be carefully selected and their methods of application shall be specified so as to ensure the fulfilment of their safety functions and to minimize interference with other safety functions in the event of their deterioration.

If only one surface can be coated, this must always be the cathodic one. Adequate inspection of the continuity of surface coatings (especially on anodic metals) should be specified on products to be used in a conductive environment. (Note Sacrificial anodes are excepted). 

Besides uses in the food industry (gelling, stabilization of suspensions, covers and coatings), application in cosmetics and in pharmaceuticals (hair sprays, lotions, tablets), in ceramics production and in oil-well drilling, have been described. 

Where highly poHshed surfaces are manufactured or stored for short intervals between different phases of processing, relative humidity and temperature are both maintained constant to minimise surface moisture films. If these surfaces are shipped or stored for extended intervals, protective coverings or coatings may be required. 

Woddwide consumption of plasticizers is estimated at 3.5 x 10 t (31), and is of the order of 1 million tons in Western Europe (Eig. 7 Table 4). The distribution of plasticizers into various appHcations is as foUows 27%, wine and cable covering 23%, extmsion/profile 17%, film and sheet 13%, coated fabrics 12%, wall covering and 8%, undersealing/coating.

Asphalt Asphalt is used as a flexible protective coating, as a bricklining membrane, and as a chemical-resisting floor covering and road surface. Resistant to acids and bases, alphalt is soluble in organic solvents such as ketones, most chlorinated hydrocarbons, and aromatic hydrocarbons. 

White, friable corrosion products composed of Bayerite AI2O3 3H2O, caustic, and NaA102 cover corroded areas (Fig. 8.3). The white corrosion product and deposit usually test as distinctly alkaline when mixed with distilled water. Corrosion products usually cling tenaciously to the underl3dng metal and do not form voluminous lumps. Instead, corrosion products line and coat generally wasted surfaces below. 

It is advisable to saturate all corks with sodium silicate solution after fitting and boring them (p. 3, Note i). They are then covered with lead foil, wired in, and coated with shellac.

The subject of paints and coatings is complicated and covers a large number of both uses and conditions. There are few publications that describe all aspects that are particularly suitable for an engineer. There are limited publications on such specialized subjects as the protection of iron and steel. 

Failures due to delamination of the gunite coating have been reported in the USA, but have not been observed to any significant extent in F.urope although some early failures of the anode system have been associated with high local current densities in areas of low concrete cover and high moisture or salt contentThe major application of this anode system is therefore on structures that are relatively dry with a uniform current requirement.
