COSHH Control of substances

COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) UK legislation regulating toxic dusts, vapors, and gases. [Pg.1425]

The EU issued a Directive in 1998 covering the protection of health and safety of workers from the risks related to chemical substances [11]. In the UK there is a legal requirement based on this Directive, namely Statutory Instrument 2002/2677 [12]. The UK Health and Safety Executive issues guidance on implementing COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) Regulations. Each laboratory is required to assess the risk associated with each chemical (or generic families of chemicals) in use in that laboratory. This risk is assessed according... [Pg.134]

Many of the chemicals and much of the equipment used in laboratories are potentially hazardous. It is essential that these hazards are clearly identified and appropriate working procedures defined together with adequate training of staff and readily available facilities to deal with the effects of any possible accident. These aspects of laboratory work are covered in the UK by COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) Regulations and by OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) in the USA. [Pg.24]

Safety is always a vital consideration when using any type of chemical. There are a host of legislative issues that must be taken into account, which are designed to offer protection to both client and aromatherapist. These include COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) and The Safety of Medicines and an increasing number of EC regulations, but the situation is... [Pg.4]

Aromatherapists need to be aware of a number of legislative regulations. These include The Medicines Act (1968) COSHH, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health HSWA, Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) and CHIP, Chemicals (Hazard Information and Packaging for Supply) Regulations (CHIP 2 1994). The MCA (Medicines Control Agency) also has significant implications and constantly encroaches on the supply and use of products related to health. [Pg.235]

It is important to remember that all these tests should be preceded by an appropriate risk assessment in order to implement all the reasonable health and. safely measures. For instance the use of such toxic chemicals as dichloromethane is the subject of COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulation. Other activities where latent energy is involved, as in the application of hydrostatic pressure, and scattering of specimen debris from a fracture test, also pose a degree of hazard. Obviously the full circumstances are best known to the actual people engaged in any specific work, and therefore they are best placed to conduct a risk assessment and establish appropriate health and safety measures practices. [Pg.544]

A risk assessment to comply with the UK COSHH (control of substances hazardous to health) regulations is more easily undertaken when handling chemicals for example. It can often be readily estimated whether a given emission from an operation will exceed the accepted occupational exposure limit (OEL). If it is well below the figure, then no further action is necessary. [Pg.231]

H-statements (in fact the original R-phrases) have been divided over the different categories guided by the COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) essentials scheme [28], mainly led by the height of exposure giving toxic effects, the presence of a threshold value, the severity of the effect and reversibility of the effect. [Pg.559]

C hardness 9 Moh sp. gr. 3.98 thermal expansion (20-1000 C) 8.5 x 10- sp. heat 0.18 (20 °C), 0.22 (100 C). It occurs naturally, but impure, in S. Africa and elsewhere but is generally produced by extraction from bauxite followed by a firing process at high temperature. Corundum is used as an abrasive and as a refractory and electroceramic, e.g. in sparking plugs (see also alumina). COSHH. Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations, 1988. Safety. Most countries have government guidelines on safe handling and use of chemicals, such as UK Health Safety Executive COSHH (control of substances hazardous to health), which is more focused on exposure risk. This can cause problems, such as when HSE issued a chemical alert about glutaraldehyde, and its potential for causing respiratory sensitisation. Immediately, several customers asked to change from glutaraldehyde to a different chemistry. [Pg.410]

Make a careful survey of the field to determine the weeds to be controlled. Choose the most suitable and safest chemical and the best time for spraying. The risks associated with the use of any herbicides should be assessed as defined in the HSE regulations (COSHH - Control of Substances Hazardous to Health). Appropriate measures should be taken to control aity risk. [Pg.116]

Under legislation known as COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health), a detailed risk assessment has to be made, documented and filed for every experiment performed. This may indicate that special safety precautions are deemed necessary, such as using a fume cupboard, or a face-mask. How to make these assessments is beyond the scope of this book. ... [Pg.16]
