Corrugated board boxes

The most extensive studies to date on transfer from secondary packaging to foods have been carried out by Jickells and co-workers (Jickells et al., 2005). These studies used combinations of food and packaging as would be used for retail sale. Cartonboard and corrugated board box were used in the study because they are used widely as secondary packaging materials. Model compounds (benzophenone, diheptyl phthalate, 2,6-diisopropylnaphthalene, 2,2-dimethoxyphenylacetophenone, 2-ethylnaphthalene and 2,4,6-...

Table 4 shows that after model validation, the calculated mineral oil content for different paper products (newspaper, magazine, corrugated board, folding boxes from RCP for food and non-food applications) was in the range of the measured average values of about 20% and fits completely in the measured range of minimum and maximum values. 

The stability of the hemicellulose adiiesives and the effect of particle size were subsequently assessed. Hemicellulose adhesives were prepared with a portion (one-sixth) cooked and the remainder raw with borax and sodium hydroxide as before. Different particle sizes of hemicellulose were used for the suspended portion. The mixtures were used to glue corrugated board test samples after 4 hours or 4 days standing. The results (also on citrus box material) shown in Table III clearly indicate that the ply adhesion strength of the adhesives was not affected by standing or by particle size.

A cage pallet is exactly what it says it is, usually a metal solid decked two-way entry pallet with demountable cage sides and lid. A box pallet is similar to the cage pallet but is usually of plywood sheet or heavy corrugated board construction (triwall).

Corrugated and Solid Fiber Boxes. Cormgated and soHd fiber boxes are used primarily as shipping containers. Both types of containers are made from several layers of paperboard, normally referred to as combined board. Container board is the material from which the combined board is fabricated. Although both types of boxes serve the same general purpose, eg, in the handling, storage, and transportation of commodities, they differ markedly in thein manufacture, stmcture, and performance.

The substitution of recycled fibre-based boxboard for foodstuff and from corrugated boxes as transport packaging to virgin fibre-based products is impossible due to insufficient availability of fibres and of paper and board production capacity. 

A bulk box, sometimes called bag in box, consists of a box within a box plus other elements such as end pads, PE bag liners, and closing materials (tape, glue, staples). The double-wall corrugated kraft board consists of an outside finer, a corrugating medium, a center finer, another corrugating medium, and an inside liner the single-wall board... 

Most label papers are chemical pulp, with additives, only. Most box boards are layers of mechanical or semi-chemical pulps with chemical pulps on the face and sometimes the back facings. Corrugated will probably, today, be nearly all recycled material, whereas unbleached semi-chem would have been used in the past for the corrugated medium. Any Kraft facing paper will probably still be 80-90% virgin Kraft pulp in make-up.
