Prior to blending, the LCP was dried at 155°C for 5 h. The melt blending of the materials was carried out with a Berstorff ZE 25 x 33D corotating twin-screw extruder at a melt temperature of 290°C, with a screw speed of 200 rpm, and an output of 6.4 kg/h. The extrudate was immediately quenched in a water bath and repelletized. 

Example 3. Hydrolysis in an Extruder.69 PET reactive extrusion experiments were carried out on a 25-mm Berstorff ZE25 corotating twin-screw extruder with a barrel length-to-screw ratio of 28 1. The extruder consisted of six barrel sections equipped for heating, cooling, and controlling the temperature of each section of the extruder. Initially reaction extrusion of PET and water was performed with cold water at room temperature injected into the extruder. Typical operating conditions were reaction temperatures of 230-265° C, extruder speeds...

The constraint that the tip of one screw element wipe the flank of its mate in self-wiping, corotating twin-screw extruders leads to a unique relationship for the shape of the screw channel (Booy, 1978,1980). Figure 13 is an isometric view of this channel and Fig. 14 is a cross section of the channel in a plane that is perpendicular to the plane which defines the helix angle. Figure 14 shows the actual shape of the channel, which is described by the following expressions ...

The same assumptions and equations used in developing an expression for kialob for single-screw extruders can be used to describe mass transfer rates in the type of corotating twin-screw extruder considered here. In this regard. Fig. 14 is relevant, and ki a/ob will be given by Eq. (53) ... 

Werner (1980) has studied devolatilization in corotating twin-screw extruders when the volatile component was stripped from the polymeric solution by applying a vacuum to the system. Rough estimates of the equilibrium partial pressure of the volatile component in the feedstream for each of the systems studied by Werner indicate that this pressure was less than the applied pressure, which means that bubbles could have been formed. Figure 17 shows the influence of the externally applied pressure on the exit concentration for a methyl methacrylate-poly(methyl methacrylate) system of fixed concentration. Note that the exit concentration decreases as the pressure is decreased, but seems to approach an asymptotic value at the lowest pressures studied. Werner also reported that at a fixed flow rate and feed concentration the exit concentration did not vary with screw speed (over the range 150-300 min" ), which also suggests that ky alay, is independent of screw speed. Figure 18 is a plot of data obtained by Werner on an ethylene-low-density poly(ethylene) system and also shows that decreases in the applied pressure result in decreases in the exit concentration, but here a lower asymptote is not observed.

Recalling the profound differences in the melting mechanisms in SSEs and in corotating twin-screw extruders (Co-TSE) (Chapter 5), we see that the latter one creates all of the melt almost instantaneously, resulting in a very narrow melt age distribution, while in SSE the age distribution is very broad. Thus, Co-TSEs and twin rotor melting devices [e.g., continuous mixers (CMs)] are better suited to be reactors of polymer melts, as is reflected in the current industrial reactive polymer processing practice.

As one alternative in this subproject, the complex flow conditions in corotating twin screw extruders are analyzed by means of the simulation software BEMflow [889], which is based on the Boundary-Element Method (BEM). For this method just the boundaries of the examined region have to be meshed. The particular surfaces can be moved relatively to each other.

PS blends with EPDM were compatibilized by addition of either SB (polystyrene/polybutadiene di-block copolymer) or SEP (polystyrene/ethylene propylene di-block copolymer) and were blended in a corotating twin-screw extruder T = 200°C (Table 11.9). The strands were quenched and pelletized. Some of the pellets were injection-molded (200°C) into 4 mm-thick specimens and irradiated to 50 kGy (3-MeV electron accelerator). Another part of the pellets was similarly irradiated and then injection-molded. The samples for notched Izod impact testing (ASTM D256) were annealed for 24 h at 80°C, or were left at RT for 3 weeks, before testing [van Gisbergen et al., 1990,1991b]. 

All materials were dry blended together in a high speed blender following the predesigned composition ratios. Then a corotating twin-screw extruder (SHJ-30, diameter 30 mm) was employed at a screw speed of 110 rpm and barrel temperatures...

A peroxide-induced reactive compounding of PP/GRT blends in a corotating twin-screw extruder was carried out to prepare thermoplastic elastomer alloys (Wiessner et al., 2012). The extrusion experiments showed that the width of the residence time distribution was the key parameter determining the mechanical properties of elastomer alloys, whereas the mean residence time had little effect. This was confirmed by performing both quasi-static and cyclic tensile tests.
