A key factor in the C02 capture and storage system is the need for a functioning transportation system for the C02 captured at energy conversion units. In industry, large steam reformers generally produce between 20 000 and 100 000 Nm3/h of hydrogen. These reformers can be scaled down to 1000 Nm3/h. Their disadvantages are their large size and a high cost for materials, imposed by the conditions of pressure and temperature. Compact steam reformers have been developed for use with fuel cells. These reformers operate at a lower pressure and temperature (3 bar, 700 °C) the requirements for materials are thus less. For these units, energy conversion efficiency can reach 70%-80%. [Pg.283]

The introduction of each 2-carbon unit ties up one molecule of OAA, because the acetyl group condenses with OAA to form citric add, which then travels through the cyde and becomes malate. Malate then leaves for the cytosol, and OAA is not regenerated. Consequently, continued use of acetyl groups for gluconeogenesis would lead to depletion of some of the intermediates of the Krebs cyde. This point introduces the concept that the intermediates in the Krebs cycle act in a catalytic manner in the conversion of energy fuels to CO2. [Pg.232]

Fossil fuels such as coal, oil, gas, and all types of biomass and domestic and industrial wastes are burnt or gasihed for the conversion of energy. In evaporation-intercalation devices solar energy conversion would, at least in the more efficient case of a thermal system, not be converted by exciting electrons and rapidly separating them from holes, but by transferring atoms or molecules across a phase boundary by evaporation which is usually a very efficient process. It is, consequently, neither necessary to use materials which are well crystallized like those developed for photovoltaic cells nor is it necessary to prepare sophisticated junctions. A compacted polycrystalline sheet of a two-dimensional material which is on one side placed in contact with an electrolyte, sandwiched between the layer-type electrode and a porous counter electrode, as it is used in fuel cells, would constitute the central energy conversion unit. Some care would have to be taken to choose an electrolyte which is suitable for intercalation reactions and which is not easily evaporated through leaks in the electrodes. Thin layers of polymeric or solid electrolytes would seem to be promising. [Pg.171]
