Microscopy (qv) is appHed when particle identification and, perhaps, shape evaluation ate important in addition to size. Shape characterization is used in the abrasives (qv) industries, pollution or contamination assessment, and forensic studies (see Forensic CHEMISTRY).

Contamination assessment of an injured individual should be performed by a trained health professional under the supervision of on-the-scene medical personnel. This assessment should include collecting radiation and chemical agent measurements using instrumentation identified in Section 6.12, nasal wipes, and collection of saliva, blood, and other samples for laboratory testing. The distribution of contamination and locations of wounds on the body should be recorded. 

Research stndies employing exposnres of organisms to SPMD extracts in a physiologically nentral medium are increasingly being applied. We envision that this approach will continue to find application in a wide variety of contaminant assessment research studies.

The Joint CBD Program focus on CA fails to address risks and responses end to end, and as a result, science and technology investments in biodetection do not provide a balance among CA, exposure diagnosis, and contamination assess-ment/decontamination. 

Humidifiers should be avoided if possible as they may become a source of contamination (e.g. microbiological growth). The monitoring of past and current activities of combat vehicles and their impacts on the ecological burden of military training areas is an important task.
