Contact plating, definition

The characteristics of the pump relate the applied pressure on the cake to the flowrate at the exit face of the filter medium. The cake resistance determines the pressure drop. During filtration, liquid flows through the porous filter cake in the direction of decreasing hydraulic pressure gradient. The porosity (e) is at a minimum at the point of contact between the cake and filter plate (i.e., where x = 0) and at a maximum at the cake surface (x = L) where sludge enters. A schematic definition of this system is illustrated in Figure 2. [Pg.160]

Fractionation, by definition, is simply the mass transfer between a liquid phase and a gas phase in contact with each other. A fractionation column is simply a tall, vertical, cylindrical pressure vessel that contains numerous flat internal metal plates called trays. Each tray allows liquid to flow over it, so the liquid flows from tray to tray by the force of gravity. The liquid thus enters the top tray. The liquid portion not vaporized in the column s trays is taken out in the column s bottom liquid accumulation. Gas enters the column s bottom section and flows through each tray to the top section. Entering vapor pressure is its driving force. Gas not absorbed by the liquid exits the column s top section. [Pg.70]

Cellulose powder. Supplied ready for use and usually requires no further treatment, not even the addition of the stationary phase, since this is acquired from the aqueous solvent. The use of cellulose in columns is an alternative to the use of cellulose in the form of thin layers coated on glass plates (Chapter 3). Cellulose columns are essential if a preparative separation is required, and they have also been found more convenient for quantitative estimations. A difference between the techniques which may affect the solvent flow, is that in a column the support and stationary phase are in contact with mobile phase before the separation starts, whereas in thin layer the mobile phase has a definite boundary which moves ahead of the solutes. [Pg.125]

If such a licence holder is placed on the underside of a horizontal glass plate the normal force is nominally zero, but there is still a strong resistance to shear, which is then clearly due to adhesion. The dilemma as to what is the true normal force remains, however, since air pressure plays some part and there may also be some element of normal force that is due to capillary attraction. Nevertheless, in. spite of these ambiguities, it is reasonable to define shear adhesion as the shear force needed to move two surfaces in contact when the directly applied normal force is zero. Because the very term adhesion carries with it the implication that an adhesive has been used, the natural adhesion between surfaees. so closely related to friction, is sometimes termed "stiction. Then stiction may be defined as the frictional force encountered between two. surfaces in contact when the applied normal force is zero. Even this is not an adequate definition, however, since it is often found in practice that stiction builds up with time, and thus it is ncx e.ssary also to state the time that the surfaces have been in contact. [Pg.590]

SLI plates were kept in contact with air for different periods of time. The obtained kinetic curves of oxidation of the plates by the air are presented in Fig. 13.6. After reaching a definite critical temperature and moisture content, a vigorous oxidation or burning of the plates commences. This phenomenon is quite similar to the processes observed during curing of the pasted plates. At the end of this period of rapid oxidation, the active mass contains 50—60% sponge lead and up to 40—50% lead oxide and lead sulfate. This composition of the negative active mass yields only a very low capacity, and often none at all. [Pg.544]
