Product development in water-based paints must consider how paint residues are to be recycled in the user s painting facilities. In certain paint systems, such as auto body paint booths, overspray is caught in circulating aqueous liquors and reconcentrated by ultrafiltration (see Fig. 123). Concentrate solutions are added to the appropriate paint formulations. In a special stove-drying paint system, the material recycling rate is ca. 95%. The special membranes needed for the ultrafiltration step were developed by Hoechst subsidiaries Herberts and Hoechst Celanese Corporation, together with plant construction specialists. [Pg.178]

Also associated with equipment installation was the close co-ordination between the manager s construction specialists and safety staff to ensure adequate information and education on potential hazards was passed to all parties involved. Bearing in mind the large generating units installed (475 000 kW) and associated equipment, with voltage levels up to 735 000 volts, exposure to risk of men and equipment was always potentially high. [Pg.63]

Since the OELs provide the basis for ventilation requirements, an astute designer tries to find out how secure the OELs of the chemicals which will be used in the plant he or she is planning. Some of the chemicals used may totally lack OELs. Therefore, it is advisable to become familiar with the relevant literature, preferably together with a specialist. It is clear that the ventilation engineer needs to be aware of the possible significance of toxicology for industrial ventilation construction. [Pg.241]

Many incidents have occurred because the wrong material of construction was used. This has usually been the result of errors by maintenance or construction personnel or suppliers, who did not use or did not supply the materials specified. Few failures have been the result of errors by materials specialists who incorrectly specified the materials to be used. [Pg.299]

Selection of fans and ducting for local extract must be more rigorous than for other systems. The fan must be capable of withstanding abrasion or corrosion from the contaminants, and if they are flammable must have a flameproof or out-of-air stream motor. The ducting also must be able to withstand abrasion or corrosion and must be fully sealed to prevent escape of contaminants within the building. For specialist applications such as fume cupboard extract, ducting and fans are often of plastic construction. [Pg.430]

Ultrasonic techniques. Wall thickness can be measured to monitor the progress of general corrosion, cracks can be detected and hydrogen blisters identified. Certain construction materials such as cast iron cannot be examined by ultrasound. Skilled operators and specialist equipment is required. Plant can be examined in situ except when it is above 80°C. [Pg.911]

AAore accurately worded, the title of this paper should read Some Poorly Understood Aspects of Stability in Certain Commercial Emulsions/ Its objective is to present some empirical data relative to certain commercial emulsions. It is assumed that the specialist in any given field is already familiar with most, if not all, of the data herein reported pertaining to the emulsion in his particular field. The data are presented for consideration by the specialist in a given field who is insufficiently familiar with the problems in another, apparently unrelated, specialized field with the hope that such cross breeding may be provocative of fresh thinking and new approaches. Moreover, no attempt is made herein to generalize or to construct hypotheses. [Pg.64]

The design, construction and application of thickeners, centrifuges and filters is a specialised subject, and firms who have expertise in these fields should be consulted when selecting and specifying equipment for new applications. Several specialist texts on the subject are available Svarovsky (2001), Ward (2000) and Wakeman and Tarleton (1998). The theory of sedimentation processes is covered in Volume 2, Chapter 5 and filtration in Chapter 7. [Pg.408]

Optical designers and specialists in heat transfer calculations in the chemical engineering and mechanical engineering sciences are familiar with the mathematical construct known as The Equation of Radiative Transfer, although most chemists and spectroscopists are not. The Equation of Radiative Transfer states that, disregarding absorbance and scattering, in a lossless optical system... [Pg.142]

Safety reviews A safety review (HAZOP study or equivalent study for hazardous operations) must be conducted by engineers, operators, and design specialists while the modification project is in the design phase. This allows (and encourages) safety changes to be made with minimum effort. Once the system is constructed, changes are difficult and costly to make. [Pg.529]

The second option considered was use of interception wells. One- or two-pump wells could be constructed at calculated spacings to create a hydraulic trough parallel to the canal to intercept the product. This design was considered more acceptable to the safety officer and the facility engineer, but was rejected by the maintenance foreperson because of the relative complexity of the operation system. The number of submersible pumps and sophisticated electronic controls would have required employment (or training) of technical specialists beyond the cost budgeted under normal operations. [Pg.367]

The optimum design of a hydrocyclone for a given function depends upon reconciling a number of conflicting factors and reference should be made to specialist publications. Because it is simple in construction and has no moving parts, maintenance costs are low. The chief problem arises from the abrasive effect of the solids materials of construction, such as polyurethane, show less wear than metals and ceramics. [Pg.54]

The streetcar suburbs of the following decades offered more land, at lower prices, to a new class of homeowner. This growth was not, however, a simple, inevitable, or natural extension of growing affluence. Rather, as Kenneth Jack-son notes in his comprehensive history of the suburbs, Crahgrass Frontier, it required the emergence of a class of suburban developers and real estate specialists who lobbied municipalities for services, directed the extension of transportation, and drew the new spacious property lines for construction. The central incentive of these entrepreneurs, needless to say, was to convert as much land... [Pg.29]
