Selection of fans and ducting for local extract must be more rigorous than for other systems. The fan must be capable of withstanding abrasion or corrosion from the contaminants, and if they are flammable must have a flameproof or out-of-air stream motor. The ducting also must be able to withstand abrasion or corrosion and must be fully sealed to prevent escape of contaminants within the building. For specialist applications such as fume cupboard extract, ducting and fans are often of plastic construction. 

Ultrasonic techniques. Wall thickness can be measured to monitor the progress of general corrosion, cracks can be detected and hydrogen blisters identified. Certain construction materials such as cast iron cannot be examined by ultrasound. Skilled operators and specialist equipment is required. Plant can be examined in situ except when it is above 80°C.

Safety reviews A safety review (HAZOP study or equivalent study for hazardous operations) must be conducted by engineers, operators, and design specialists while the modification project is in the design phase. The second option considered was use of interception wells. One- or two-pump wells could be constructed at calculated spacings to create a hydraulic trough parallel to the canal to intercept the product.
