Platinum was found in conjunction with gold after the Spanish conquest of South America. It was referred to as platina, or Htde silver. It was regarded as an unwanted impurity in the silver and gold, and was often discarded. However, scientific interest in platinum gradually grew and in 1741 the first samples of New World platinum were brought to England for scientific examination. 

Mexico, the world s leading producer of silver since the Spanish conquest, obtains virtually its entire silver production from lead—2inc mines in the central cordillera. Mexico retained its dominance in silver production until the discovery of the Comstock Lode in Nevada in 1859. Discoveries in Colorado, Ari2ona, and Montana placed the United States as the world s top silver producer from 1871 until 1900. As these mines played out, Mexico s vast resources returned it to its former position of dominance.

Impure, native platinum seems to have been used unwittingly by ancient Egyptian craftsmen in place of silver, and was certainly used to make small items of jewellery by the Indians of Ecuador before the Spanish conquest. Cold-hammering was used in the late Stone Age to produce plates of gold for ornamental purposes, and this metal has always been synonymous with beauty, wealth and power. Considerable quantities were accumulated by ancient peoples. The coffin of Tutankhamun (a minor Pharaoh who was only 18 when he died) contained no less than 112 kg of gold, and the legendary Aztec and Inca hoards in Mexico and Peru were a major reason for the Spanish conquests of Central and South America in the early sixteenth century. Over the course of human history rivers have reflected the impact of human activity. Since the beginnings of the great civilizations 5000 years ago, humankind, in its pursuit of agriculture, exploration and conquest, has exploited and mistreated the environment on a broad scale. Major changes on the face of the earth occurred. Forests were cut, pastures grazed, fields cleared and plowed "... as the landscape was carved to fit the new economic demands of humankind." (7). At the outset, one must note the fact that the public health values of the agricultural chemicals far outweigh the health hazards in their use. The conquest of the insect-borne plagues with the aid of insecticides can now be foreseen. Agricultural chemicals make possible greatly increased production and preservation of food. Here were offenses violating the traditional American juridical respect for private property. And from these activities there emerged not "forces" or "causes," but men whose techniques for one kind of conquest had been demonstrated long before.

While Szpilfogel was on the stand, I had been pondering again just how the Farben robberies could be considered part and parcel of international conquest.

Hand-in-hand with the conquest of basic industries was the conquest of labor to make these industries work for the expansion of a war which had been brought on by prior conquests of industry and prior exploitations of labor. 

As to state-of-mind, it is our opinion that there must be a showing that the defendants knew that such military power would be used to carry out a national policy of aggrandizement to deprive the peoples of other countries of their land, property, or freedom — in short, a policy of conquest. 

There was the rearmament. Then there were the country-to-country robberies, charged as separate crimes. Property is the wherewithal by which, with private or pubhc enterprise, a community sustains the life of its citizens. While we had proved the harm done the individual owners, our main purpose was to emphasize the exploitation of the conquered country s economies and the plunder of their industries. Then the cancerous production necessities of an ever-growing military machine, and the sheer lawlessness bred by the whole program of conquest, reached their pinnacle in enslavement, torture, and murder. 

Metals, fuels, and explosives these were the spoils of the first unknown conquest in an undeclared war. Von Schnitzler described it happily to his colleagues as the fulfillment of "a long-cherished plan of uniting the chemical industry of Austria."...
