Conjunctive power

Conjunctive power. The probability that a number of endpoints will be jointly significant as a function of a set of presumed clinically relevant differences. [Pg.460]

The weighted residual method provides a flexible mathematical framework for the construction of a variety of numerical solution schemes for the differential equations arising in engineering problems. In particular, as is shown in the followmg section, its application in conjunction with the finite element discretizations yields powerful solution algorithms for field problems. To outline this technique we consider a steady-state boundary value problem represented by the following mathematical model... [Pg.41]

The heat pipe is self-contained, has no mechanical moving parts, and requires no external power other than the heat that flows through it. The heat pipe, which has been called a thermal superconductor, was described initially ia 1944 (1) but commercial use did not foUow. The same basic stmcture was again described ia 1963 ia conjunction with the space nuclear power program (2). [Pg.511]

Ballard Power Systems, in conjunction with the province of British Columbia and the government of Canada, have converted a diesel bus for Vancouver, B.C. Transit (43). This 9.1-m vehicle is powered by a 105-kW fuel cell. Gaseous hydrogen, stored on board the bus in DOT-approved glass-wound composite cylinders operating at 20.7 MPa (3000 psi), provides the necessary fuel requited for the 150-km projected vehicle range. [Pg.462]

Instmmentation advances have increased the power and quahty of the fundamental analytical techniques used in conjunction with LIMS. Unfortunately, these advances come at a price of increasing complexity and volume of information. Despite ah. of the architectural and technological advances of computer hardware and software, the demands of the information requirements still exceed the computing capabhities, so as to put continuing pressure on computer manufacturers to iacrease storage and processiag capabhities evea further. [Pg.521]

Note The above switching devices by themselves or in conjunction w ith power diodes can be developed into a variety ol new devices to suit any power conversion and control application. MCTs and IGCTs arc a few such hybrid devices. For more details refer to the literature on the subject in the Further reading. [Pg.118]

A directional G/F relay basically is a power-measuring device, and is operated by the residual voltage of the system in conjunction with the residual current detected by the three CTs used for non-directional protection, as shown in Figure 21.19. To provide directional protection, therefore, a residual VT is also essential, in addition to the three residual CTs. The voltage phasor is used as a reference to establish the relative displacement of the fault current. In healthy conditions, i.e. when the current flows in the right direction. = 0. (refer to. Section 15.4.3 for details), and the relay remains inoperative. The relay operates only when the current flows in the reverse direction. [Pg.691]

Combination of Evaporative Cooling and Steam Injection. The combination of the above techniques must also be investigated as none of these techniques is exclusive of the other techniques and can be easily used in conjunction with each other. Figure 2-44 is a schematic of combining the inlet evaporative cooling with injection of steam in both the compressor exit and the combustor. In this system, the power is augmented benefiting from... [Pg.104]

Since the reliability of gas turbines in the power industry has been lower than desired in recent years because of hot-corrosion problems, techniques have been developed to detect and control the parameters that cause these problems. By monitoring the water content and corrosive contaminant in the fuel line, any changes in fuel quality can be noted and corrective measures initiated. The concept here is that Na contaminants in the fuel are caused from external sources such as seawater thus, by monitoring water content, Na content is automatically being monitored. This on-line technique is adequate for lighter distillate fuels. For heavier fuels, a more complete analysis of the fuel should be carried out at least once a month using the batch-type system. The data should be input directly to the computer. The water and corrosion detecting systems also operate in conjunction with the batch analysis for the heavier fuels. [Pg.671]

Cathodoluminescence microscopy and spectroscopy techniques are powerful tools for analyzing the spatial uniformity of stresses in mismatched heterostructures, such as GaAs/Si and GaAs/InP. The stresses in such systems are due to the difference in thermal expansion coefficients between the epitaxial layer and the substrate. The presence of stress in the epitaxial layer leads to the modification of the band structure, and thus affects its electronic properties it also can cause the migration of dislocations, which may lead to the degradation of optoelectronic devices based on such mismatched heterostructures. This application employs low-temperature (preferably liquid-helium) CL microscopy and spectroscopy in conjunction with the known behavior of the optical transitions in the presence of stress to analyze the spatial uniformity of stress in GaAs epitaxial layers. This analysis can reveal,... [Pg.156]

Both single-phase charging systems and three-phase charging systems would contain power electronic devices that as a side effect introduce waveform distortion and create power quality problems. Filtering devices used in conjunction with residential charging systems could be used to reduce harmonics and other power quality problems, but the cost of such filtering devices is currently quite high. [Pg.441]

In the electric power industry, batteries are used in conjunction with other ways of generating electricity. For example, a home may employ photovoltaic cells or a wind turbine for electricity. However, photovoltaic cells cannot operate without sunlight and wind turbines cannot produce electricity without wind. Batteries charged by photovoltaic cells or wind turbines in off-use times or by the electric utility at hand can provide electricity when the local system is inoperative. The electric power delivered in this mode tends to be in the range of 1 to 4 kilowatts. Batteries have been used for this puiyiose since the 1970s. [Pg.1101]

Galvanostatic polarisation—constant direct current power units, or banks of accumulators or dry cells used in conjunction with a variable resistance. [Pg.1006]

Again, from the work of Ref 6, power for IPN by BalMort using a Mk I mortar in conjunction with a No 6 ASA A1 CB detonator was found to... [Pg.965]
