Keep in mind that you might wish to make two or more moves during your retirement years. For example, you may wish to live your first 10 or so years in your present residence, move to a smaller condominium for the next five or so, and then move into a retirement center or Continuing Care Retirement Community. The more you think in these terms, the more realistic you will be. 

If you own your home, you might be able to sell it, buy a nice condo at a lower price, and invest the difference. Many do this and feel they have done the right thing. Condominium life can have style ... 

Maintenance is normally not required. You are responsible for things inside your unit, but nothing on the outside. You will have a deed and/or mortgage and pay real estate taxes. But you join with other owners to pay for outside maintenance, including recreational areas, landscaping, and even roofing. There are many elegant condominium facilities in the United States. All have their own special requirements, and almost all have a homeowner s association in which you automatically become a member. 

A growing number of retirees are living happily in adult mobile parks, some of which are quite elegant. The homes are really prefabricated houses, and some have two or three bedrooms. Mobile homes normally cost less than condominiums or single-dwelling houses. Often you can sell a private home, buy a mobile home, and bank the difference. 

Many retirees are so enthusiastic about retirement centers, they have closed their eyes to other possibilities. Retirement centers can come in all sizes, varieties, and prices. Many have medical centers. Large ones often have churches, organized social activities, golf, swimming, and tennis. Compared to adult condominiums and mobile-home parks, retirement centers are more self contained.
