Number of main condensate pumps - the number of pumps per turbine designed to transport the main condensate from the condenser to a feedwater tank. The condensate return (returned, condensate or simply condensate) tank is positioned at the lowest point in a condensate return (CR) system and collects condensate from the various steam heating and process applications. If traps or condensate pumps are installed to aid the return of the condensate (as is usually the case), this is called a mechanical CR system. Air conditioner condensate lines are sometimes installed so that they penetrate the slab to dispose of the water in the subslab area. Two 50% capacity condensate pumps operate in parallel during normal operation. A third 50% capacity condensate pump is provided and maintained in standby for automatic starting if required. Manually Controlled System A manually controlled system comprises one or more transformer-rectifiers each with its associated control panels which supply the d.c. to the various anodes installed in the water box spaces. Each transformer-rectifier is provided with its own control panel where each anode is provided with a fuse, shunt and variable resistor. These enable the current to each anode to be adjusted as required. Reference cells should be provided in order to monitor the cathodic protection system. Since the end product is to be useful heat, there is an opportunity with heat pump compressors to use a drive motor which will contribute to this. The internal combustion engine is used for some drives, adding its radiator heat to the load, and at a higher temperature than the refrigerant condenser can provide. As the installation is static, and required to run for comparatively long times without attention, the ideal fuel is natural gas. Compressor and drive assemblies must be robust to withstand the extra vibration, and should be separate from the rest of the circuit. Figure 2.8.1 shows a typical installation for flasks and other containers in which the product is to be dried. The condenser temperature for this plant is offered either as -55 °C or as -85 °C. For this type of plant, a condenser temperature of -55 °C is sufficient as this temperature corresponds with a water vapor pressure of approx. 2.1 10 2 mbar, allowing a secondary drying down to approx. 3 10-2 mbar. This is acceptable for a laboratory plant, in which the limitations are not the condenser temperature but the variation of heat transfer to the various containers, the rubber tube connections and the end pressure of the vacuum pump (2 stage pump, approx. 2 10 2 mbar). Figure 2.8.2 shows that these units are designed for very different needs. The ice condenser in this plant can take up 7.5 kg of ice at a temperature down to -53 °C. [Pg.133]

Some pumps have easily exchangeable filter cartridges that not only hold back oil mist, but clean the circulating pump oil. Neutral species are best sampled using molecular beam methods in which the neutral beam is modulated between the sampling orifice and the ionization chamber of the mass spectrometer and only the modulated component of the mass spectrometer output is recorded.
