According to Pink, left brain abilities will be necessary, but not sufficient, in the conceptual age. A half a brain will be necessary, but not sufficient. A whole brain will be needed if one is to succeed, especially in the U.S. and other advanced countries. [Pg.433]

The period 1930-1980s may be the golden age for the growth of qualitative theories and conceptual models. As is well known, the frontier molecular orbital theory [1-3], Woodward-Hoffmann rules [4, 5], and the resonance theory [6] have equipped chemists well for rationalizing and predicting pericyclic reaction mechanisms or molecular properties with fundamental concepts such as orbital symmetry and hybridization. Remarkable advances in aeative synthesis and fine characterization during recent years appeal for new conceptual models. [Pg.221]

Tamoxifen users present also a doubling incidence of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) (118 vs. 62 cases). This increase is similar to that seen with HRT. There are some aspects of this side effect that should be commented on to improve the management of women eligible for tamoxifen treatment and at risk for DVT (Goldhaber 2005). In the subanalysis of the Italian study (Decensi et al. 2005), the venous thromboembolism definition included DVT, PE, and superficial phlebitis. Most of the VTE that the authors reported were, in fact, cases of superficial phlebitis, whereas the admitted definition of venous thromboembolism excludes this entity. Such conceptual differences, together with differences in age and background characteristics between the four studies, can explain the diversity in the incidences observed. [Pg.263]

Before we can predict the response of a plant variety to a specific pollutant or group of pollutants, we must understand the following factors genetic variability (both between and within species), climatic and edaphic factors, interactions with other pollutants, interactions with biotic pathogens and insects, and the growth and physiologic age of susceptible plant tissue. The overall conceptualization of relationships between pollutant exposure and ultimate effects is shown simplistically (Figure 11-1) in an adaptation from van Haut and Stratmann. ... [Pg.471]

Let us consider some of the further implications of Figure 1.1. The view that cellular life can be arrived at from inanimate matter may imply in principle the possibility of reproducing it in the lab. Why not, if all we need is a bunch of molecules in a properly reactive environment This way of thinking is the basis of the experimental work on the origin of life. In fact, the best way to demonstrate the validity of this view would be to make life in the laboratory - the age-old Faustian dream. We do not know how the process of the transition to life really occurred in nature, so how can we reproduce it in the laboratory The answer to this question is conceptually simple, as pointed out by Escheiunoser and Kisakiirek (1996) ... [Pg.3]

Patricia Spacks (1995) notes that the conception of the emotion of boredom as an involuntary mental state rather than as a reprehensible sin did not exist until fairly recently and C. S. Lewis (1936) says that the concept of romantic love did not arise until the European Middle Ages. Williams and Spacks also make the point (which Lewis overlooks) that the mental states themselves and their attendant expressions can exist even if there is no concept that captures them. They make the further crucial observation that when the emotion is conceptualized, it is also changed (Williams 1993,91 Spacks 1995,12-13). When a person has the conceptual wherewithal to say to himself, "God, I m bored " the state of boredom will typically become more acute and efforts to alleviate it more intense. [Pg.248]

Thermal aging has also been widely studied for its technological interest, but most of the studies are empirical or semiempirical (using, e.g., the Arrhenius law and an arbitrary end-life criteria, from mass-loss kinetic curves). Powerful conceptual tools (radical chain kinetics, coupled diffusion-reaction schemes, etc.) are available to avoid or, at least, to reduce significantly the empiric approaches. [Pg.476]

In a study by Fallon and Thurman (1996), a conceptual model was presented to explain how DAR could be used to follow runoff through Perry Lake in northeast Kansas. In the model, the reservoir already contained water with atrazine and DEA from the previous year s runoff. The arrows in Figure 30.16 show the direction of the flow for the dam. Near the dam, the water is older in age and contains water from the previous summer, whereas the upstream water contained herbicides that had entered the reservoir during the fall and winter. Therefore, the DAR values were higher on the upstream end of the reservoir, as shown in Figure 30.16 by the actual DAR values for each time period. The concept of the DAR has proved to be a useful tool in following water movement through a reservoir. [Pg.471]
