The industrial application of the Co304 catalyst for ammonia oxidation is complicated by its sensitivity to poisoning action of small amounts of sulfur compounds in the ammonia-air mixture. This phenomenon was studied with the use of radioactive sulfur containing S3s that made it possible to measure very low concentrations of sulfur (168). Poisoning results in decrease both of selectivity and limiting load. A noticeable decrease in selectivity starts at sulfur concentrations in the gas mixture from 0.05 mg/m3. The cell shows better performance in comparison to the cell based on unsupported catalyst with twice the Pt-black loading. These results are explained by the higher surface area of Pt carbon supported catalyst and are in good correlation with CV and BET data. The results show that carbon supported catalyst can be successfully used as the electrode material for the fabrication of relatively cheap cathode catalyst layers in DMFC. There are advantages and disadvantages to all of the processes just described. Some are easier to implement than others. Some require adjustment of parameters such as pH or nitrate concentration. Some have problems with third phase formation and solvent degradation or become impractical for industrial applications because of the limited loading capacities of the extractants.
