Server computers

A back end program essentially acts as a computational server for the front end. It receivcsinpiit, computes something, sendsit back to the front end and then looks for further input or commands from the front end. It can be used over and over for different cal-cii lation s. If it has been explicitly stopped, the Iron t end will start... [Pg.156]

FEMAP andVisQ With FEMAP, users can define analysis models, integrate the appropriate solver technologies and review, interpret and document their results quickly and efficiently. VisQ speeds and automates the batch solution process by integrating remote computer servers across networks and the Internet with FEMAP on the engineer s desktop. [Pg.608]

A simple HTTP client program (e.g., fetch ) can be pointed at an HTTP server, accept lines of input from a standard input stream, send them as messages to an HTTP server, accept replies from that server and then write them to a standard output stream. The fetch program becomes a serial filter for any such HTTP server (which is now acting as a network compute server). [Pg.250]

A major disadvantage is the time required for the computation. The entire algorithm (generation of 3-D structure, conformation analyses, property calculation, property mapping on surface or field and autocorrelation transformation) needs between 100 and 100000 s for one molecule. With today s computer technology, using multi-processor compute servers and highly vectorized software, it is possible to calculate up to several thousand three-dimensional autocorrelation descriptors vtithin a day (Table 7). [Pg.585]

World Wide Web. The World Wide Web (WWW) is the world wide connection of computer servers and a way of using the vast interconnected network to find and view information from around the world (Bullock, 2003 Stout, 1996). Internet uses a language, TCP/IP for talking back and forth. The TCP part determines how to take apart a message into small packets that travel on the Internet and then reassemble them at the other end. The IP part determines how to get to other places on the Internet. The WWW uses an additional language called the HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP). The main use of the Web is for information retrieval, whereby multimedia documents are copied for... [Pg.543]

Computer and network security should be protected in several ways. Computer, server, and telecommunication rooms should be physically secured by locks. Computers should have firewalls and encryption available for sensitive documents. The principles of least access, need to know, and separation of functions should determine user authorizations rather than employee hierarchy. Only authorized personnel should have access to computer rooms and signs should not be posted indicating the location of the room. [Pg.294]

Nonmotive applications for 10 to 20 series Li-ion cells include stationary power hackup systems for telecom, computer servers, and desktop computers. The scope of these varies widely and Li-ion is still in limited use in these applications. But the energy and power density advantages over traditional battery chemistries in these products seem to indicate there is a future for Li-ion. [Pg.381]

APC resides in a separate computer/server, linked to the DCS system. The platform used in Pearl GTL for APC is the Shell proprietary package SMOCPro (Shell Multivariable Optimising Control) in combination with RQEPro (Robust Quality Estimator). In total approximately 70 SMOC controllers and 100 Quality Estimators are being developed for Pearl GTL. [Pg.160]

Based on the data collected, the computational server aims to support the presentation layer by running corresponding algorithms. To support composite search with multiple constraints such as author and publication time, we develop a sophisticated search engine that is tuned to provide short response time. The data source dimension describes the nature of the data and how it was gathered in the reported research. Most research papers will have at least one data source. The categories considered are naturally occurring data (Nat), research-spedlic data (Res), reflection (Ref), and software (SW). [Pg.126]

The tools used by the chemical and materials simulation group are commercial, academic, and homegrown simulation and analysis software, in addition to dedicated compute servers. The development of some of those homegrown ... [Pg.157]

A LIMS is a database management system designed especially for the tasks of a laboratory. Such a system can store a lot of data (not only about samples) and give information about the data. In addition to data related to the samples and orders, one can create files on, for example, all laboratory workers, holiday lists, analytical instruments (inventory), all relevant telephone numbers and postal and e-mail addresses, the stock of chemicals in use and in store, the stock of equipment, and books and other literature. As all these files create a requirement for storage capacity and performance, if information is searched for it is perhaps better to use a PC for this purpose. Nearly all the performance of the LIMS computer (server) is needed for the LIMS and should not be used for other activities. Only if there is a powerful computer for the LIMS could the mentioned files be stored in the frame of the LIMS database. [Pg.1476]
