Channels were milled on a PMMA disk by a CNC (computer numerically controlled) machine using end mills (of size 127-762 pm) [226,638]. Channels were milled in PC wafers using a milling machine or direct laser writer [227]. 

Solid Freeform Fabrication (SFF) technologies have in common the capability to build objects with comphcated 3D geometries, directly from Computer-Aided Design (CAD) files, without the necessity of tooling. SFF technologies also have in common the employment of an additive building process, in which a 3D object is built up by the repeated addition of layers of material. This is in contrast to more standard technologies which are characterized by the implementation of a subtractive fabrication process, e.g., CNC (Computer Numerical Control), where the 3D object is manufactured by calculated removal of material from a block of raw material. 

Turret drilling machines provide a number of tools mounted in a turret designed to handle a sequence of operations. The turret drilling machine is also available as a computer numerically controlled machine.

Microfabricated MALDI sample targets were also prepared from PMM A by computer numerical control (CNC) milling. In this case, enzyme functionalized cylindrical posts (360 p,m x 360 p,m) served as individual sample targets on the MALDI plate and were used for on-probe characterization of nucleic acids. The advantages of this device included reduced sample consumption and handling and reduced analysis times. Alternatively, MALDI targets with twin anchors (400 p.m) were prepared from silicon wafers by anisotropic dry etching in an inductively coupled plasma.
