Milling machines

The fleshing is done on a multiroller machine that pulls the hide over a rotating blade, similar to a milling machine that cuts off the flesh from the inside of the hide. The machine includes a mbber roUer that holds the hide near the rotating fleshing blades. Through the adjustment of the clearances or the thickness of the hides and the resiUence of the mbber roUer the flesh is effectively removed regardless of the differences in the thickness of the hide from back to belly and flanks. [Pg.83]

Quantifying the effect of surface roughness or morphology is difficult, however. Surface preparations that provide different degrees of surface roughness also usually produce surfaces that have different oxide thicknesses and mechanical properties, different compositions, or different contaminant levels. The problem of separation of these variables was circumvented in a recent study [52] by using a modified microtome as a micro milling machine to produce repeatable, well-characterized micron-sized patterns on clad 2024-T3 aluminum adherends. Fig. 2 shows the sawtooth profile created by this process. [Pg.446]

Fixed systems are those where movement of the hood or other changes to the system, except perhaps opening and closing of lids and doors, is not possible. One example is the hood with a sliding door surrounding a drilling or a milling machine another is the laboratory fume hood and another is the canopy hood above or the enclosure around a paper machine. [Pg.810]

An illustration of the impact that improved hardness has had on technology is presented in Figure 1.1. This shows the dramatic increase in performance of machine cutting tools (lathes, milling machines, saws, drills, and the like) as the tools became harder. It also shows how very fast cutting speeds have become. The top cutting speed (>5000 m/sec) is about 16% of the speed of sound in air ... [Pg.4]

Several instruments and devices are certainly commercially available the need however for the availability of a precision mechanical workshop close to the laboratory must be underlined, since the construction of special apparatuses and components is often required, involving many machine tools (lathes, milling machines, presses, etc.), parts and different materials. See for instance remarks reported by Schnepf and Schnockel (2002). [Pg.552]

Teflon (polytetrafluoroethylene) does not leach out plasticisers and can be purchased in substantial blocks, sheets and rods of various thicknesses. The preferred method is to machine a trough from a solid block of this material. This is a practicable procedure if a good milling machine is available but one is limited to a rather shallow trough. This does not matter if it is to be used for the study of monolayers at the air/water interface only but is a severe limitation if it is to be used to make LB films. Attempts have been made to use a metal trough and coat it using a Teflon aerosol. Such attempts have not proved very successful. [Pg.39]

In addition to size and cost concerns, control sensors also must be accurate to reach their full potential. They are often used when control is critical. For example, if a position sensor on a milling machine is inaccurate, the parts produced on that machine may not meet specifications. Not only are the time and materials used to make those parts wasted, but also an entire assembly operation could be shut down for lack of parts. [Pg.401]

Many types of grinding or milling machines have been proposed. This section introduces some representative ones developed and applied earlier. [Pg.201]

The basic requirement is a diffusion-pumped chamber attached to an ion gun. The ion gun is filled with high-purity inert gas such as Ar. This gas is accelerated between two electrodes with a high potential difference. This ionizes the gas and a beam of focused and collimated gas particles is aimed at the specimen surface. Modern electronics allows very precise manipulation of the ion beam in several ways. Most ion milling machines are singlebeam systems where one surface of the specimen is thinned. Alternatively, double-sided machines are also available where there are two ion beams focused on either side of the same specimen that is milled from both the top and bottom surfaces. [Pg.392]

Channels were milled on a PMMA disk by a CNC (computer numerically controlled) machine using end mills (of size 127-762 pm) [226,638]. Channels were milled in PC wafers using a milling machine or direct laser writer [227]. [Pg.38]

The second step in manufaeturing the coil is then to make a Teflon (which best meets requirement 5) support with a groove that follows exactly the calculated pitch that is done with a computer controlled milling machine. We decided to make a groove with a width of 0.6 mm. The eventual difficulty in making the coil support is the quality of the... [Pg.40]

The preferred method for cutting the helical baffles is to use a milling machine with an indexing head and a 1/8" thick disc cutter. The tangent table angle is set to 87 for proper cutter clearance. Depth of cut is set to. 4375". Spiral pitch is. 25" (one turn in. 25"). Gear change (velocity ratio) is 1/40 for machines with a standard pitch of 10 inches. For other machines, use the fol-... [Pg.37]
