Holland and Jorgenson reported separating amines using anion exchange and reversed-phase columns in 1995 and since then, there have been numerous reports of combining two LC columns (2D-LC) to achieve efficient sample separation. In addition to the few references mentioned in this section, see Chapter 4 in this handbook on two-dimensional comprehensive liquid chromatography. 

In the last years, the use of comprehensive liquid chromatography has been greatly increased and it has been widely used to separate and characterize various complex samples, such as biomolecules [10-15], polymers [16,17], lipids [18-21], essential oils [22], acidic and phenolic compounds [23-28], pharmaceuticals and traditional medicines [29-31], etc. Comprehensive LC has been reviewed by several authors [32-37]. 

New concepts presented in this edition include monolithic columns, bonded stationary phases, micro-HPLC, two-dimensional comprehensive liquid chromatography, gradient elution mode, and capillary electromigration techniques. The book also discusses LC-MS interfaces, nonlinear chromatography, displacement chromatography of peptides and proteins, field-flow fractionation, retention models for ions, and polymer HPLC.

In contrast to comprehensive gas chromatography (GC x GC), the number of comprehensive liquid chromatography (LC x LC) applications reported in literature are much less. It can be affirmed that LC X LC presents a greater flexibility when compared to GC x GC since the mobile phase composition can be adjusted in order to obtain enhanced resolution [132], Comprehensive HPLC systems, developed, and applied to the analysis of food matrixes, have employed the combination of either NP x RP or RP x RP separation modes. However, it is worthy of note that the two separation mechanisms exploited should be as orthogonal as possible, so that no or little correlation exists between the retention of compounds in both dimensions.
