From the standpoint of electrowetting contact angle saturation, the Lippmann-Young equation (Eq. (1) above) is valid up to V = Vsat at contact angle saturation. Assuming a composite insulator with a fluoropolymer layer over an underlying oxide layer, then at contact angle saturation Eq. (1) can be rewritten as... [Pg.292]

Ceramic Fibers. The major use of ceramic fibers was, until recently, in high-temperature insulation. Recent improvements in manufacturing technology have opened new applications, particularly in advanced composites, insulation, and chemical components. The main advantage of these fibers is refractoriness in general and, for oxide fibers, good oxidation resistance and strength retention up to 1200°C. From that standpoint, oxide fibers are considerably better than carbon fibers. Most ceramic fibers are still expensive. [Pg.172]

Soybean protein can be nsed to produce a wide variety of non-food prodncts, including plastic films, building composites, insulating foams, plywood adhesives, and other wood bonding agents [72]. [Pg.52]

A very popular technique using HTV is the combination of moulded silicone parts together with extruded HTV profiles, tubing or mouldings. Examples of such composites are catheters used as medical devices, electrical cables, long rod insulators and composite insulators. [Pg.303]

The market for composite insulators is growing steadily. Composite designs generally employ a fibreglass rod or hollow core for mechanical strength, with an outer housing made from either silicone mbber, EPDM or EPR. Insulator service life can be affected by electrical, mechanical and environmental stresses. One of the biggest... [Pg.43]

Along with composite insulations, there are other types of insulating materials and structures that do not fit into any of the main categories. An example of such a thermal barrier is honeycomb insulation, which was developed for use in space exploration. This type of insulation, known by its honeycomb structure, is composed of a phenolic resin-reinforced fiberglass cloth. The manufacturing process and the application of honeycomb insulation in the Saturn S-II rocket system is depicted in Fig. 7.11. The cells in the... [Pg.400]

The type of corrosive environment responsible for brittle fracture of suspension composite insulators was established. A series of FTIR experiments was performed to identify chemical functionalities formed during the degradation process of composite insulators affected by brittle fracture. It was shown that the brittle fracture process was caused by the formation of nitric acid either outside or inside an insulator leading to stress corrosion cracking of the glass/polymer composite rod material. Nitrate was detected on the composite fracture surfaces inside a 115 kV suspension composite insulator which failed in service by brittle fracture. 17 refs. [Pg.105]

Polydimethylsiloxane is the base polymer for silicone formulations employed in outdoor high voltage systems, not only in the case of coatings but also for composite insulators [3, 9-11]. It is a widely applied polymer within the silicone family [42], with remarkable and sometimes unique properties, which enable applications not only in outdoor installations but also in many technical fields [42-47]. The polymer chain is composed of silicone oxygen bonds, accompanied by two side methyl groups connected to the siHcone atom, as shown in Figure 1.4, where the monomer unit is illustrated. [Pg.6]
