A closed coil spring made from polypropylene is to have a steady force, W, of 3 applied to it for 1 day. If there are 10 coils and the spring diameter is IS mm, estimate the minimum diameter for the spring material if it is to recover completely when the force is released. 

Springs made from coils of wire are used to store elastic energy which is a form of potential energy. The most common type of spring is cylindrically shaped, with coils evenly spaced and of the same diameter. A ballpoint pen uses a coil spring to hold the point in place for writing and to return it to the case for protection. 

Mechanical seal designs are referred to as friction drives, or single-coil spring seals, and positive drives. 

The seal shown back in Figure 56.4 depicts a typical friction drive or single-coil spring seal unit. This design is limited in its use because the seal relies on friction to turn the rotary unit. Because of this, its use is limited to liquids such as water or other non-lubricating fluids. If this type of seal is to be used with liquids that have natural lubricating properties, it must be mechanically locked to the drive shaft. 

Although this simple seal performs its function satisfactorily, two drawbacks must be considered. Both drawbacks are related to the use of a coil spring that is fitted over the drive shaft. 

Nevertheless, the simple and reliable coil spring seal has proven itself in the pumping industry and is often selected for use despite its drawbacks. In regulated industries, this type of seal design far exceeds the capabilities of a compressed packing ring seal. 

The pressurized water is decompressed in a friction valve (see Figure 27.3), where the liquid is forced through a narrow slot in a coil spring. Fligh shear is produced and dissolved air is forced out of the solution.

Jounce Bumper/Coil Spring Isolator Assembly on 2004 General Motors uses TPU elastomer to form the upper and lower coil spring isolators while integrating the jounce bumper cup and jounce contact surface, respectively. 

A good example of a longitudinal wave can be seen when a coiled spring, anchored at one end, is given a sharp push from the other end. The action causes a disturbance in the spring (Fig. 2.2) which can be seen to run through the whole length. 

The nose (B) holds the firing pin (C) and screws into the upper end of the head (H) in such a manner as to leave a recess below the firing pin (C). Half-blocks (E) and a coiled spring (D) are positioned in the recess to hold the pin (C) in an unarmed position prior to firing. The front end of the nose (B) is closed with a thin A1 disk (A) for protection against foreign matter or air resistance. 

Bomb Igniter, AN-M9, shown in Fig 5-13, consists of two concentric steel tubes joined at both ends to form an annular space which is filled with 1.6-lb of WP for land bombing or Na for water bombing. Proteins have several different levels of structure. The order of their constituent amino acids is only the first. The arrangement of the polypeptide backbone is the second level. Some common arrangements include a helix, which is like a coiled spring, and a pleated sheet. The third level of structure involves the folding of the protein. The huge number of different arrangements for the twenty different amino acids and the variety of ways that the protein can be shaped allows for an almost infinite variety of proteins.

Infrared radiation causes excitation of the quantized molecular vibration states. Atoms in a diatomic molecule, e.g. H—H and H—Cl, vibrate in only one way they move, as though attached by a coiled spring, toward and away from each other. This mode is called bond stretching. Triatomic molecules, such as CO2 (0=C=0), possess two different stretching modes. In the symmetrical stretch, each O moves away from the C at the same time. In the antisymmetrical stretch, one O moves toward the C while the other O moves away.
