A poster display will never feel like an oral presentation, where the nervousness beforehand is replaced by a combination of satisfaction and relief as you unwind after the event. However, it can be a very satisfying means of communication, particularly if you follow these guidelines. 

In addition to the 19 main papers, two short papers and nine posters (preceded by short oral presentations) were featured at the Seminar. Nine of these eleven short communications are summarized in the form of abstracts on pages 261-286. The titles of these communications are listed in the Table of Contents. Abstracts of two communications are not included that of D. Valentine, Jr. (Catalytica Associates, Inc.) on phosphines having both chiral phosphorus and chiral ligands has been published in... 

In other words, an oral presentation is an interaction among people, not a performance. The atmosphere should not suggest an I the speaker/you the audience dichotomy but rather a we the communicators unity, reflected in part by the fact that the speaker literally says we more often than you . The audience members become co-communicators through their listening, their nonverbal cues, and perhaps their comments or questions. As a result, listening improves, rapport between the speaker and the audience increases, and speaker apprehension diminishes.

Hart, H. 2009. Introduction to Engineering Communication, 2nd ed. Upper Saddle River, NJ Prentice-Hall. A textbook aimed at introductory courses in engineering or computer science shows students how to communicate their ideas, whether writing documents or giving oral presentations. 

Volunteer to make oral presentations to colleagues clients customers and student, community, and professional groups. Every time you prepare for and deliver an oral presentation, you have the opportunity to improve on a skill that is highly valued within the engineering profession and society. Most of Chapter 3 is devoted to helping you write effective documents and make convincing oral presentations. 

In more recent times, the interest in the fundamental aspects of homogeneous catalytic oxidations has been declining as witnessed by e.g. the number of contributions presented at the International Symposium on Homogeneous Catalysis (ISHC). A comparison between the Amsterdam (1992), Stockholm (2000) and the recent Poznan (2010) meetings is reported in Table 23.1 and shows that of approximately 250-300 contributions presented at each symposium, over roughly 20 years, the number of those devoted to oxidations has decreased from 46 in Amsterdam, including 6 invited lectures and 3 oral presentations, to 24 in Poznan with just 2 oral communications and no invited lectures. 

Through a focus on audience analysis, strategies for inproving the effectiveness of both written and oral presentations are explained. Commonly accepted (but frequendy broken) formatting rules for figures and tables are covered, as are hints to effective use of communication software. (Available on the acconpanying CD.)... 

Public speaking can be scary at first, but oral communication is crucial in engineering design activities. When done well, it communicates information faster than can the written word, and it allows for immediate communication from the audience to the speaker and between members of the audience. Thus, oral presentations (with questions) provide for a type of feedback control on the communication process, whereas written communications are closer to feed-forward control. 

All of the reports, papers, and oral presentations constitute communication. But, in an information sense, such forms of exchange are filtered and subject to noise. The reports only contain a fraction of what is in the original log, and papers contain a personal interpretive flavor. Oral presentations may be less connected to fact, are ephemeral, and may be affected by the fluency of the speaker and the attention of the listener. A return to the original notebooks usually finds that they are difficult to follow because of arcane notations, or incompleteness. Even the flow of the research is difficult to track since many activities are usually intertwined.
