Communication formalized

Written Memos. One of the most effective devices for improving maintenance communications is a newsletter or internal memo. The memo s success depends heavily on communicating formal tips and techniques in the mechanics language and using photos, sketches, and drawings generously to get the message across.

Ironically, the medical community formally recognized the importance of blood pressure, in 1972, long before that of cholesterol, in 1987. But, as with cholesterol, medical researchers have found, only rather recently, that for the most part, the lower your cholesterol level the better. You can expect that blood pressure control and the prevention of high blood pressure, medically termed hypertension, will get increasing attention in the coming years. 

Respect communication formalities and styles. Watch for any changes in body language that might confirm or belie the meaning of spoken words. 

When asked, employees are able to answer questions about the workplace safety policy. Policy is communicated formally through written statements and presentations. Policy is communicated and reinforced informally through what managers say and do daily. 

Safety processes and communications Formal safety processes were inadequate with insufficient regular safety planning. Safety goals were not regularly set and when they were set frequently weren t met. Insufficient budget was allocated for safety, and the safety team didn t have the visibility to advocate for more. There was insufficient safety information sharing between factories or even with the corporate office. 

The new formalism is especially useful for parallel and distributed computers, since the communication intensity is exceptionally low and excellent load balancing is easy to achieve. In fact, we have used cluster of workstations (Silicon Graphics) and parallel computers - Terra 2000 and IBM SP/2 - to study dynamics of proteins. 

Fire and uncontroUed polymerization are a concern in the handling of chloroprene monomer. The refined monomer is ordinarily stored refrigerated under nitrogen and inhibited. This is supported by routine monitoring for polymer formation and vessel temperature. Tanks and polymerization vessels are equipped for emergency inhibitor addition. Formalized process hazard studies, which look beyond the plant fence to potential for community involvement, are routine for most chemical processes. 

The lines of communication that were established in the toller selection phase can be formalized in the contract stage. The contract should spell out the persons to contact and under which circumstances they must be contacted. Detailed and continuing exchange of information is necessary in order to optimize the administration and performance of the tolling contract. The parties may want to come to agreement and include the following in the contract or supporting documentation to enhance communication ... 

All tollers should eventually be assessed regarding their own quality improvement programs as well as meeting requirements. This can be done either formally, such as with an assessment process and form, or informally through normal communications. In either case, the results of the toller assessment should be documented and well understood within the organization. 

Successful project control includes understanding and anticipating organizational issues that may occur with contractors and subcontractors. Once the contractor relationship is formalized, it is then communicated to all affected personnel on the site. 

Don t imply acceptance of a change to contract in any communication other than a formal contract amendment. 

Once you have agreed on broad goals for PSM, consider enlisting someone from your company s corporate communications or public relations staff to help you draft a formal vision statement. This will help you (1) assure a well-written document and (2) win communicators support by involving them. 

Communications can take many forms, both formal and informal, but the content must be essentially consistent to be effective. 

Formal internal communications newsletters, chairman s letters, bulletin boards, video conferences, staff meetings, etc. 

Find out where your company s formal communications originate. Who is in charge of putting out press releases, newsletters, product information Arrange to meet with those responsible, to see how you might incorporate PSM information into these publications and offer to provide sample texts. 

If you decide on a formal presentation, consider having the full PSM team participate. Similarly, written communications concerning the plan (if, for example, it is broadly distributed for comment) should originate with the team. This will not only acknowledge their contribution but will also tangibly demonstrate the interdisciplinary nature of the challenge you have undertaken. 

A formal communication plan is established to keep everyone appropriately informed on progress, problems, and their resolution. 

Margolus (margfiOb] generalizes Feynman s formalism - which applies to strictly serial computation - to describe deterministic parallel quantum computation in one dimension. Each row in Margolus model is a tape of a Turing Machine, and adjacent Turing Machines can communicate when their tapes arc located at the same coordinate. Extension of the formalism to more than one dimension remains an open problem. 

Water treatment technical service representatives must develop relationships with boiler plant operators and managers and formally meet on a periodic basis so that all involved understand what must be achieved and work in concert toward reaching common, agreed-upon objectives. The frequency of meetings depends on the size of the boiler plant, but essentially, informal communications should take place (up and down the line) very regularly, with a formal program review taking place perhaps every three to four months. 

In addition to the formal committees specified in directives, the commission is assisted by other expert committees and working groups. Depending on the subject matter, these can be drawn from the regulatory bodies, the scientific community, or industry and end-user associations.
