Handbooks are notorious for listing compounds according to their common names One gives the name sec isoamyl alcohol for a compound which could be called 1 2 dimethylpropyl alcohol according to the lUPAC functional class rules The best name for this compound is the substitutive lUPAC name What is it" ...

Classes of compounds are defined by the functional group. There are many common names and functional group names. Multiple names are possible. 

The fourth class which are peculiar to PVC have one thing in common namely an ability to react witti HCl. They include such diverse substances as inorganic lead salts, heavy metal soaps, organo-tin compounds, epoxides and many others. Chapters 12 and 14 include both common names and systematic names for organic compounds representing the various classes of hydrocarbons and functional groups. This appendix focuses on the systematic nomenclature for organic compounds, as proposed by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (lUPAG). 

Common names for many simple haloalkanes are still widely used, however. In this common nomenclature system, called functional class nomenclature, haloalkanes are named as alkyl halides. (The following names are also accepted by the lUPAC.)...

Simple ethers are frequently given common functional class names. One simply lists (in alphabetical order) both groups that are attached to the oxygen atom and adds the word ether. 

The more fully systematic lUPAC rules were adapted for the highly ordered alphabetical CA indexes. Most common names and special rules for some classes of substances were discontinued in 1972. Names used in the previous CA indexes as well as trivial names used in the literature have been retained as cross-references in the CA Index Guide and in the CAS database, and are available for polymer searching and retrieval. For each identifiable substance, a rigid order of precedence of chemical functions and compound classes is followed to determine first the preferred index heading parent, and then a single preferred name. 

BMPs interact with BMP receptors I and II on the cell surface/membrane [1,22]. BMP receptors are serine/threonine kinases. The intracellular substrates for these kinases called Smads function as relays to activate the transcriptional machinery [23]. The three functional classes are (1) receptor-regulated Smads, namely, Smads 1, 5, and 8, (2) the common partner Smad — 4, and (3) the inhibitory Smads 6 and 7. There are Smad-dependent and independent pathways for activation of BMP signaling including new bone formation.
