Protection of commercial knowledge. The expert system acts as a knowledge archive for formulation information, thereby overcoming the problems of staff turnover. 

Subjective Forecasts can be made on a subjective basis using judgment, intuition, commercial knowledge or any other relevant information. Methods range widely, like the Delphi technique, in which a group of forecasters tries to obtain a consensus forecast with controlled feedback of other analysts predictions and opinions, and other relevant information. 

By 2001 Shell was convinced it had the technology, operating experience and commercial knowledge to develop a world-scale GTL plant. Qatar Petroleum and Shell started discussions on the development of the Pearl GTL project in 2002 and the Pearl GTL project received final approval from the Government of the State of Qatar in July 2006. Pearl GTL has a capacity of 140,000 barrels per day of GTL products. By mid 2012 the plant is expected to reach its full capacity.

The sale of hides is on a weight basis. The value of a hide depends on the type of animal, the seasonal characteristics, the location of the slaughter, the type of cure, and the market conditions. Cost of the hides is about 50% of the sale price of the leather, so an accurate knowledge of the hides and the leathermaking potential of the hides is critical to commercial success. In the case of furs and exotic skin leather production, the value of the pelt is by far the most important factor (7). 

Chapters 1 and 2 have been reorganised and updated in line with recent developments. A new chapter on the Future of Purification has been added. It outlines developments in syntheses on solid supports, combinatorial chemistry as well as the use of ionic liquids for chemical reactions and reactions in fluorous media. These technologies are becoming increasingly useful and popular so much so that many future commercially available substances will most probably be prepared using these procedures. Consequently, a knowledge of their basic principles will be helpful in many purification methods of the future.

Once the highest steam level is set, then intermediate levels must be established. This involves having certain turbines exhaust at intermediate pressures required of lower pressure steam users. These decisions and balances should be done by in-house or contractor personnel having extensive utility experience. People experienced in this work can perform the balances more expeditiously than people with primarily process experience. Utility specialists are experienced in working with boiler manufacturers on the one hand and turbine manufacturers on the other. They have the contacts as well as knowledge of standard procedures and equipment size plateaus to provide commercially workable and optimum systems. At least one company uses a linear program as an aid in steam system optimization.
