Another variation of making an electrode connection is shown in Fig. 3.2. In this case, bare copper wire is inserted into a glass tube and coiled at the end. The coiled wire is attached to the back side of the sample using silver paint and allowed to dry at 80 °C for 20-30 min. The entire assembly is then encased in epoxy and annealed at 80 °C for 2 h. [Pg.22]

Recommended methods for assessing the corrosivity of waters, including flowing potable waters, are described in ASTM 02688 1983. Three procedures are described in which test specimens in the form of wires, sheets or tubes are placed in pipes, tanks or other equipment. The test assembly for the first of these consists of three helical wire coils mounted in series on, and electrically insulated from, a supporting frame. The assembly must be installed so that flow is not disturbed and turbulence and high velocities, e.g. of more than 1 -53 ms , are avoided. A minimum test period of 30 days is recommended. A Wood s metal bath contains a metal alloy (50 per cent bismuth, 25 per cent lead, 12.5 per cent tin, and 12.5 per cent cadmium) with a low melting point ( 70°) which may be used up to quite high temperatures ( 400°). The metal is easily oxidized at the higher temperatures and, therefore, is usually covered with a protective layer of carbon. An electrically heated bath is recommended, since the temperature is then easily controlled. This may be made by taking an ordinary tin can (preferably low and wide), covering it with asbestos paper, and winding a coil of nichrome wire around it. The sensor of figure 14.2(c) consists of a small ceramic tube coated with tin (IV) oxide and a suitable catalyst. A heater coil maintains the tin oxide temperature (between 200 and 500 °C). The signal is the resistance measurement between the two electrodes at opposite ends of the tube. The assembly is packaged in a protective housing with an open area (covered by wire mesh) to allow gases to enter. Each NMR instrument has a depth gauge to allow us to position the NMR tube correctly with respect to the spinner. Some molded parts have configurations which require portions of the cavity to be removed in order for the part to be ejected. Solenoid coil bobbins, as an example, consist of a cylindrical body around which wire will be wound, with two large flat flanges at each end of the cylindrical body to keep the wire contained within the length of the body. In this device, a platinum wire-filled tube made of a Nation cation-exchange membrane is inserted into another, larger Nation tube and coiled into a helix. The helical assembly is inserted within an outer jacket packed with granular conductive carbon. An alkaline eluent, for example, NaOH or Na2C03, flows in the annular channel between the two membranes, and pure water flows through the inner membrane and the outer jacket countercurrent to the direction of eluent flow.
