Depth gauges

Geography, Geology Pulse/echo techniques are used in the location of mineral and oil deposits and in depth gauges for seas and oceans. Echo ranging at sea has been used for many years (SONAR). 

A penetrometer consisting of a weighted needle and depth gauge may be used to estimate Tr In this crude test, the penetration of the weighted needle is monitored as the temperature of the polymer, in contact with the needle, is increased. 

A depth gauge uses a unit of length such as feet or meters a speed gauge uses a unit of velocity such as miles per hour (mph) or kilometers per hour (kph) the RPM gauge measures revolutions per minute. 

Once depth is established with a depth gauge, measurement can be read directly, or the device is removed and laid onto a meter stick to determine depth measurement. 

The Standard lays down other important specifications as to the range and accuracy of the depth gauge and the method of loading the cell in small increments so that the pressures generated range from 10 to 3200 kN/m2. 

Reproducing the injection of an exact volume of liquid into the chromatograph is quite difficult. One method to improve the reproducibility to + 1 % is to use a Chaney adapter. This is a plunger guide with a depth gauge on one side that is held in place with a small set screw. Figure 20-12 top, p. 220, shows a Chaney adapter, and 20-12 bottom shows it attached to a syringe. 

Calculate What is your actual diving depth if your depth gauge reads 18 m, but you are at an altitude of 1800 m and your gauge does not compensate for altitude ... 

Each NMR instrument has a depth gauge to allow us to position the NMR tube correctly with respect to the spinner. Figure 2.1 shows the correct spatial relationships between the tube, the spinner that holds it, and the region of the NMR tube that will occupy the probe s detector (a coil of wire that is an inductor in a resistor-inductor-capacitor circuit) when the spirmer-tube assembly is in the instrument. Note that not all of the sample volume occupies the detected region. 

Your laboratory is responsible for the development of a submersible to detect oil leaks at a maximum pressure of 250 MPa. You estimate the density of sea water as (1030 15) kg m and that your depth gauge is accurate to 1.00% at a full-scale reading of 300 MPa. 

This head is used in the same way as an engineer s square, but, because the rule is adjustable, it is not as accurate. A second face is provided at 45° (Fig. 3.17(b)). A spirit level is incorporated which is usefttl when setting workpieces such as castings level with the reference surface. Turned on end, this head can also be used as a depth gauge (see Fig. 3.17(c)). 

These are also available as an easy-to-read dial depth gauge (Fig. 6.11) and an electronic model with an LCD digital readout (Fig. 6.12) operating in the same way as the caliper models.

In 1979 a number of surface marks were noted in the plates adjacent to seam welds on Calder Reactor 4. Two of the features had the appearance of crack-like defects (Figure 4 but more detailed investigations using a hydraulic manipulator with television cameras, eddy current probes, ultrasonic probes and a crack depth gauge, revealed them to be surface imperfections and fabrication flaws. 

The vernier caliper does not comply with this principle (Fig. 6.2). To ensure greatest accuracy of measurement, the workpiece being measured should be moved as close to the main beam as possible. The vernier depth gauge, however, does comply with Abbe s principle.
