Coffin

7 Coffins. Whenever the occasion arises to insert or retract a plug, a heavy lead shielded coffin is accurately aligned at the chosen experimental facility. After proper alignment, the plug is withdrawn from or inserted into the beam hole. The coffin requirements for the MTR experimental holes can be satisfied by three coffins, each coffin to take care of one of the following three groups of holes  

a special crane sling is utilized to align the coffin at the vertical and inclined beam holes. About 6 in. of lead shielding is adequate to handle all the dummy plugs for these holes, but provision should be made for adding layers of lead for 4iot - experimental plugs. 

The radiation door in the coffin is lead and is. approximately 10 in. thick. The mechanism for opening and closing this door consists of an electric motor—driven worm gear which drives an acme screw shaft to open or close the door. The door is accurately located when open as it forms a part of the pathway on which the HB-2, HB-5, and HT-1 plugs roll. 

The dolly is used for aligning the coffin at the horizontal beam holes and plug-storage facility, and also for horizontal transportation. It is a rigid frame of welded construction supported by six heavy-duty rubber-covered wheels mounted on a common axis. To simplify maneuvering of the coffin during transportation and alignment, the dolly is operated like a two-wheeled trailer, and is moved by an electric tractor. The tractor is fitted with a special trailer hook which can be hydraulically (or electrically) operated to raise or lower the front end of the dolly. 

Removal-or insertion of the plug is performed manually by means of a long rod. When the.plug is in the coffin, radiation doors in both the beam hole and coffin, must i-be-.closed before the coffin is pul led away.

Cold-hammering was used in the late Stone Age to produce plates of gold for ornamental purposes, and this metal has always been synonymous with beauty, wealth and power. Considerable quantities were accumulated by ancient peoples. The coffin of Tutankhamun (a minor Pharaoh who was only 18 when he died) contained no less than 112 kg of gold, and the legendary Aztec and Inca hoards in Mexico and Peru were a major reason for the Spanish conquests of Central and South America in the early sixteenth century. Today, the greatest hoard of gold is the 30000 tonnes of bullion (i.e. bars) lying in the vaults of the US Federal Reserve Bank...

Initially, it was assumed that the HlV-1 population is infinite, evolution is deterministic, and antiretroviral resistance development is definite (Coffin 1995). However, our research amongst others has demonstrated that the effective population size, defined as the average number of HIV variants that produces infectious progeny is relatively small (Leigh Brown 1997 Leigh Brown and Richman 1997 Nijhnis et al. 1998). The coffin of Tutankhamun contained over 100 kg of gold. Tutankhamun was only a minor pharaoh, who died at age 18.

Nevertheless, the vitalists were not easily convinced, and it took a few decades before the vis vitalis theory was finally laid to rest. The final nail in its coffin may have been provided by Kolbe s synthesis of acetic acid from its constituent elements in 1845 (Kolbe, 1845).
