Codes, fire issue electrical code

Be sure that applicable codes and standards are followed Begin with the life and safety codes. The intent of this chapter is to reduce the risk resulting from radon, but not in a way that increases other risks. Especially important in this regard are the National Fuel Gas Code,58 National Fire Protection Code (NFPA1), and National Electric Code.59 Also the CABO One and Two Family Dwelling Code32 will be very helpful. There are thousands of code jurisdictions in the United States therefore many issues will have to be dealt with locally. 

As far as NFPA codes are concerned, as stated earlier, there are two key codes of relevance to fire safety that have no ICC equivalent. They are the National Electrical Code (NEC, NFPA 70), which has been adopted by virtually every state in the United States, and the National Life Safety Code (NFPA 101), which has been adopted by the majority of the states, as shown in Figure 21.2 (issued by NFPA). 

A code for the design and installation of electrical wiring and devices to safeguard life and property from fires. The original national electrical code was developed in 1897. It is currently issued as National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70, National Electrical Code (NEC). 

The National Electrical Code (NEC ) is a document issued every three years by the National Fire Protection Association . The document specifies the requirements for the safety of premises wire and cable installations, and also sets requirements to minimize the risk and spread of fire in commercial buildings and individual dwellings. Section 770 of the NEC defines the requirements for fiber optic cables. Although the NEC is advisory in nature, its content is generally adopted by local building authorities as Code. 

Beyond perfonnance optimization, issues relative to packaging and the need for compliance with certain safety and electronics regulatory codes are cited as reasons for a customized solution. In the latter case, a systems approach is required, especially when attempting to meet the code or performance requirements for compliance with European Certification (CE) mark or electrical and fire safety codes such as National Eire Prevention Association (NFPA) and CENELEC (European Committee for Electrotechiucal Standardization). Off-the-shelf electronics may provide the necessary performance characteristics for generic applications, and their use eliminates large expenses related to product development, plus the associated time delays. Photonics-related components are solely addressed in this section because they are used to customize instruments for application-specific systems. 

Most on-line analyzers are installed as permanent fixtures. Bearing this in mind, environmental issues associated with temperature and vibration become more critical, and the requirement for conformance to safety standards may be enforced by the need for system certification. The latter requires an assessment of the working environment, and the potential for fire and/or explosion hazard, relative to the anticipated presence of flammable vapors or gases. As with any construction project, a construction permit must be obtained from the local authority. All local construction codes must be adhered to regarding the electricity and water supply and fire safety. A health physicist or a medical physicist should be consulted to address the issues of shielding and personnel traffic in restricted areas. A radioactive material license from the appropriate authority must be in possession for the use of PET radiopharmaceuticals, before the PET center goes into operation. Authorized physicians must be included on the license.
