Codeine methylmorphine

The chemical name of codeine—methylmorphine—is rather revealing, especially for those who know organic chemistry (the study of carbon and compounds containing carbon, which are referred to as organic compounds). As with mor-... [Pg.27]

Narcotics are divided into naturally occurring, semisynthetic, and synthetic derivatives. The naturally occurring analgesics consist of morphine and codeine (methylmorphine). The semisynthetic analgesics include hydromorphone (Dilaudid) and hydrocodone (Dicodid). The synthetic analgesics consist of meperidine (Demerol), alphaprodine (Nisentil), methadone (Dolophine), propoxyphene (Darvon), and pentazocine (Talwin). [Pg.452]

Codeine (methylmorphine) Ci7Hi7N0(0H)0 CH3. — On electrolysis of the neutral sulphate hydrogen is evolved, codeine is precipitated, and the solution turns brown (Bourgoin 5). [Pg.220]

Codeine (methylmorphine) is another natural constituent of opium. More active by mouth than other narcotics, it is a weaker pain reliever than morphine, and doctors freciuently prescribe it today to treat for moderate pain. [Pg.83]

Codeine (Methylmorphine) A prodrug 0% of dose is converted to morphine. Actions are due to morphine. Also an antitussive (suppresses coughing). Minor pain relief. Similar to morphine, but less intense at doses which relieve moderate pain. At high doses, toxicity is as severe as with morphine. [Pg.50]

Morphine (5) and codeine (methylmorphine) (6), two major morphinan-type alkaloids with an isoqninoline skeleton, are extracted from opium, the dried milky sap released from the immature finits of poppies (Papaver somniferum). Morphine and codeine can interact with opioid receptors distribnted in brain tissnes and the periphery, and are most widely nsed as narcotic analgesics, with codeine also having an antitussive effect [4, 25, 32]. [Pg.549]

Morphine is the principal alkaloid of opium. It acts both as a base and as a phenol and reacts to form methylmorphine (codeine ) and diacetylmorphine (diamorphine or heroin). [Pg.266]

Codeine is the methylic ether of morphine (3-methylmorphine) and can be isolated from opium during the extraction of morphine, but is usually prepared by the methylation of morphine. Codeine is used in medicine as an antitussive drug and furthermore it has analgesic properties. It may cause addiction, but less than morphine. [Pg.353]

It has been used in the treatment of insomnia and as an anxiolytic. methyl-PGEj arbaprostil. methylphenidate [ban, inn] (methylphenidate hydrochloride [jan, usan] Ritalin ) is a CNS STIMULANT and dopamine (re) UPTAKE INHIBITOR. It is used in the treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in children, methylphenidate hydrochloride methylphenidate. [Pg.179]

Codeine, which is an analgesic and antitussive, is methylmorphine, and pharmacologically resembles morphine, with the following exceptions. The analgesic potency of codeine is approximately one-sixth that of morphine. Codeine raises the pain threshold without altering the patient s reaction to pain and produces very little euphoria. Therefore, 10 mg of morphine is far superior for alleviating pain than 60 mg of codeine. [Pg.168]

Tables 18.1,18.2, and 18.3 hst concentration measurements madeatdiEferenttimes during regular classes, final exams, and the summer when few students were present, respectively. A -Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the major psychoactive compound in marijuana. THC is rapidly oxidized to 11-hydroxy THC and then to ll-nor-9-carboxy-A -THC, which is the main metabolite excreted. The main metabolic route of cocaine involves the hydrolysis of ester linkages to produce benzoylecgonine (BE). 6-Acetylmorphine is the main specific metabolite of heroin (3,6-diacetylmorphine). Codeine is O3 -methylmorphine. Morphine-3 p-glucuronide is a metabolite formed in vivo by the attachment of a sngar to the O3 oxygen, which facilitates elimination of morphine from the body. All three of these morphine-based derivatives are narcotics. 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) and 3,4-metltylenedioxy-amphetamine (MDA) are amphetamine derivatives that are commonly referred to as ecstasy.
