Coatings pigments for

Diluents, mainly volatile aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons such as petroleum ether, dodecylbenzene or glycols, are often added to PVC pastes to lower the viscosity. These do not have a gelling effect and are evaporated off before gelation is commenced to prevent fine cracks or bubbles in the coating. Pigments for this application are required to have adequate resistance to the solvents used at the processing temperatures. 

Preferred supplied forms are powders (gold bronze), pastes (aluminum) in plasticizers (like white oil, DINP etc.) and pellets in polyethylene. Due to the chemical nature of gold bronze, there are special coated pigments for use in high temperature processes (tarnish- or heat-resistant gold bronze). Also for use in PVC, special chemically resistant aluminum and gold bronze pigments are available.

Paper. Paper is the principal apphcation for talc throughout the world. It is used as a filler, a coating pigment, and a process aid in pulping and de-inking for pitch and stickies control. As a paper filler, talc is used because of its platiness, softness, whiteness, abiUty to space Ti02, and ink receptivity. 

Functional polyethylene waxes provide both the physical properties obtained by the high molecular weight polyethylene wax and the chemical properties of an oxidised product, or one derived from a fatty alcohol or acid. The functional groups improve adhesion to polar substrates, compatibHity with polar materials, and dispersibHity into water. Uses include additives for inks and coatings, pigment dispersions, plastics, cosmetics, toners, and adhesives. 

Theie aie several additional factors that must be considered in selecting pigments for a specific coating application (40). These factors include processing stabihty requirements, pigment uniformity and reproducibiUty, particle size distribution, dispersibiUty, and compatibiUty of all materials to be used. 

Application of protective paints consists of surface preparation of steel, priming coat and finishing coats. Wherever possible, steel should be blast-cleaned before painting. Primers thoroughly wet the metal to promote adhesion of finishing paints and carry inhibitive pigments. For example, red lead oxide will minimize the spread of rust on metal surfaces. The total thickness of fmishing coats must be at least 0.125 mm for adequate protection and life. Four coats of paint usually are necessary to achieve this.
