Access to the surface of amperometric biosensors can be controlled by coverage with an appropriate permselective film. Such coatings effectively exclude coexisting interferences, and thus greatly improve the selectivity and stability. Discriminative films based on different transport properties are described. Structural factors and fundamental interactions that govern the transport through such films are discussed. Future prospects are examined. 

At first sight the application of lacquer by dipping components into a suitable tank or reservoir might seem the simplest method but in fact it is rather difficult to control and has serious limitations. Only very simple components can be prepared satisfactorily in this way more complicated shapes with recesses and reverse angles often are not coated effectively (since their configurations can lead to the entrapment of air) or may show variation in thickness of coating. For satisfactory results, even with simple components, the viscosity of the lacquer in the reservoir must be kept constant by continuous monitoring and adjustment, and the entry and removal of the components must be very smooth, well-controlled, and uniform. 

Both reduced and Pt-modified powder samples were studied in distilled water and in aqueous solutions of HC1, H2SO4, HNO3 and NaOH. Water photodecomposition proceeds moderately in distilled water and in NaOH but is strongly suppressed in acidic aqueous media. The NaOH coating effect mimicks that found by other workers earlier (see Ref. 320 and text). 319...

Composition which contains magnesium and is consolidated with polyester is not really as waterproof or moistureproof as it is thought. This may be perhaps due to the fact that the polyester has a weak resistance to acids and alkalis. The coating effect for magnesium powder is not as good as that of paraffin.

Conventional columns can be basic, they can be made in any internal diameter, they can be whiskered, and they can, therefore, be coated effectively with any phase. 

Stancell et. al. ( 0) reported the possible use of ultrathin films deposited onto relatively permeable substrates as permselective membranes. Ultrathin and highly crosslinked coatings effectively distinguish between molecules of different sizes and increase the permselectivity of the substrate film. Chang et. al. ( ) demonstrated that the permeability coefficient of silicone rubber to oxygen decreased noticeably after depositing a plasma-polymerized ethylene film on the surface. Colter, et. al. (92.93) found similar effects of plasma polymerized films as diffusion barriers in controlled-released drug delivery systems.
