In the fluidized bed gasifier, crushed coal is introduced into a fluidized bed of char together with oxygen or air and steam. Coal undergoes drying, devolatilization, gasification and combustion at essentially constant temperature of about 1000 C because of the rapid mixing characteristics of fluidized beds.

Fuel grade petroleum coke will continue to experience incremental demand in Western European markets. As such, prices will closely follow steam coal sold in European markets. Petroleum coke will continue to be priced at a discount to coal. 

In spite of these complexities, two conclusions can be made. First, petroleum coke prices will remain volatile due to cyclical demand in premium markets, fragile market hierarchies, and the orientation toward significant spot purchasing arrangements. The second conclusion is that the absolute "floor" price of petroleum coke (regardless of quality) will be linked to steam coal in Western Europe.

In the hydrogen production from fossil fiiels, if it is chemical to chemical conversion such as by tire steam-coal gasification reaction or by tire steam-methane reforming reaction, there is no such thermodynamic limitation by the Carnot efficiency. 

In tire hydrogen production from fossil fiiels, either by the steam-coal gasification reaction or by the steam-nietlrane reforming reaction, the endothermic heat of reaction is conventionally supplied by combustion of fossil fiiels. If this endothermic heat is supplied from nuclear heat, full stoichiometric conversion of fossil fiiels to hydrogen moles and effective conversion of nuclear heat to hydrogen heat can be achieved. 

The deposit mass and relative build-up rates on the medium carbon steel for the three Pennsylvania steam coals at different flame temperatures are given in Table VII, for a 12 minute time period for each test. As the flame temperature increased, the deposit mass also increased for all three coals. Most of this increase was due to a more rapid build-up of the sintered mass although there was a modest increase in the amount of deposit base material also. At the higher temperatures the fraction of coal ash collected in the deposit was one-third to one-half, (30% to 51%, Table VII) compared to the total amount of ASTM HTA.
