The hazards of chemicals are commonly detected in the workplace first, because exposure levels there are higher than in the general environment. In addition, the exposed population is well known, which allows early detection of the association between deleterious health effects and the exposure. The toxic effects of some chemicals, such as mercury compounds and soot, have been known already for centuries. Already at the end of the eighteenth century, small boys who were employed to climb up the inside of chimneys to clean them suffered from a cancer of the scrotum due to exposure to soot. This was the first occupational cancer ever identified. In the viscose industry, exposure to carbon disulfide was already known to cause psychoses among exposed workers during the nineteenth century. Even if there are already many suitable nest sites, a bird box may encourage a normally shy species of bird to stay in your yard. Bird boxes can be made of untreated wood or "woodcrete" (a concrete/sawdust composition). The latter version is useful if your garden has predatory squirrels or even woodpeckers with a taste for young birds. All bird boxes should be positioned so that you can access them easily to clean them out in fall, which is important. Put your bird box on a sheltered wall or tree trunk, well away from predators, rain, and direct sunlight. Cats can climb up and reach into boxes from all sorts of unlikely angles, as can gray squirrels, so position the box carefully. [Pg.112]

Brazzein is a sweet protein that was isolated from the fruit of the West African climbing plant Oubli (Pentadiplandra brazzeana Baillon). Along with pentadin, which was discovered in 1989, brazzein is the second sweet protein that was discovered in this fruit. Like other natural sweet proteins such as monellin and thaumatin, it is highly sweet. On a weight basis, brazzein is 500 times sweeter than sucrose when compared to 10% sucrose solution and 2000 times sweeter when compared to 2% sucrose solution. Its sweet perception is more similar to that of sucrose than that of thaumatin, and it presents a clean sweet taste with a lingering aftertaste. Brazzein is stable over a broad pH range from 2.5 to 8 and is heat stable at 80 °C for 4h.84... [Pg.640]

The first test with cellulose (Experiment 1.05) used no steam flow. Because the evolved volatile matter cracked on the vycor walls depositing an opaque, black material thereon, the wall temperature of the reactor rapidly climbed to temperatures above 1000°C. Gasification data is presented in Table 1 for the 0.54 g of cellulose fed into the reactor during the test. People must leam how to use ladders correctly. They need to know how to select them for the job, and how to place, use, carry and store them. Ladders are not intended for transporting materials. Carrying an object while climbing a ladder violates the three-point support principle because one cannot grasp the ladder at all times. A slip is very likely to lead to a fall.
