The most serious problem with input analysis methods such as PCA that are designed for dimension reduction is the fact that they focus only on pattern representation rather than on discrimination. Good generalization from a pattern recognition standpoint requires the ability to identify characteristics that both define and discriminate between pattern classes. Methods that do one or the other are insufficient. Consequently, methods such as PLS that simultaneously attempt to reduce the input and output dimensionality while finding the best input-output model may perform better than methods such as PCA that ignore the input-output relationship, or OLS that does not emphasize input dimensionality reduction. [Pg.52]

The guidance document offers a comparison of TG 420 (Fixed Dose Method), TG 423 (Acute Toxic Class Method), and TG 425 (Up-and-Down Procedure). The purpose of this Guidance Document is to provide information to assist with the choice of the most appropriate Guideline to enable particular data requirements to be met while reducing the number of animals used and animal suffering. The Guidance Document also contains additional information on the conduct and interpretation of test guidelines 420, 423, and 425. [Pg.110]

As mentioned above, a NOAEL is usually not derived in acute toxicity smdies. It is more usual that the only numerical value derived is the LD50 or LC50 value. The LD50 or LC50 values (or the discriminating dose if the Fixed Dose Procedure was used or the result of the Acute Toxic Class Method) give an indication of the relative lethal potency of a substance. The slope of the dose-response curve is a particularly useful parameter as it indicates the extent to which reduction of exposure will reduce the lethality the steeper the slope, the greater the reduction in response for a particular finite reduction in exposure. [Pg.111]

In spite of the minimal applications of computational chemistry to the chemistry of wood, the techniques have become highly developed and sophisticated in their ability to calculate chemical properties for a wide variety of compound classes. Methods based on quantum mechanics, commonly referred to as molecular orbital calculations, have been the topic of numerous books, reviews, and research papers (7,8,9,10). These techniques are concerned with the description of electronic motion, and the solution of the Schrddinger equation to determine the energy of molecular systems. Since the exact solution of the Schrddinger equation is only possible for two-particle systems, approximations must be invoked for even the simplest organic molecules. [Pg.269]

Equation (12.277) is not necessary conservative due to the finite (i.e., in practice rather coarse) size grid resolution, and some sort of numerical trick must be used to enforce the conservative properties. It is mainly at this point in the formulation of the numerical algorithm that the class method of Hounslow et al [74], the discrete method of Ramkrishna [151] and the multi-group approach used by Carrica et al [24], among others, differs to some extent as discussed earlier. [Pg.1084]

The international standard ISO 10303, widely known as STEP (STandard for the Exchange of Product data) proposes a series of data models for the exchange of engineering data between computer systems. The STEP model framework has a modular architecture Basic modules introduce generic classes, methods, and building blocks from these, domain-specific models, the so-called Application Protocols (AP), can be constructed. For the domain of process engineering, the following APs are of major interest ... [Pg.174]

Class methods have been applied to bivariate PBE only for simple problems, and generally their extension to multivariate problems is quite complicated. In what follows selected examples are discussed to illustrate these difficulties. [Pg.280]

Sectional and class methods for the solution of the collisional KE are generally called discrete-velocity methods (DVM). These methods are based on the simple idea of discretizing the velocity space into a grid constituted by a finite number of points. The existing methods are characterized by different grid structures (Aristov, 2001). For example, lattice Boltzmann methods discretize the velocity space into a regular cubic lattice with a constant lattice size (Li-Shi, 2000), whereas other methods employ different discretization schemes (Monaco Preziosi, 1990). By using a similar approach to that used with PBE, it is possible to define A,- as the number density of the particles with velocity and the discretized KE becomes... [Pg.284]
