Earlier studies had indicated aldehyde and ketone formation in the oxidation of ethylene however, later work using mass spectro-graphic analysis and gas chromatography reported no products other than CO2 and water. The coulombic efficiency determinations for the anodic oxidation of other unsaturated hydrocarbons in acid solution indicate that CO2 is the main reaction product (cf. Table 17). For lower olefins, i.e., C2H4 and oxidation is complete. For larger compounds, other products are formed however, the primary product is CO2. A general equation for hydrocarbon electro-oxidation can thus be written as... [Pg.142]

The compound known as 18-crown-6 is one of the simplest and most useful of the macrocyclic polyethers. Its synthesis in low yield was first reported by Pedersen. Greene and Dale and Kristiansen" have reported syntheses of the title compound from triethylene glycol and triethylene glycol di-p-toluenesulfonate. Both of these procedures use strong base and anhydrous conditions and achieve purification by more or leas classical methods. The combination of distillation and formation of the acetonitrile complex affords crown of high purity without lengthy chromatography or sublimation. ... [Pg.33]

The number of reported applications to analytical determinations at the trace level appear to be few, probably the best known being the determination of beryllium in various samples. The method generally involves the formation of the volatile beryllium trifluoroacetylacetonate chelate, its solvent extraction into benzene with subsequent separation and analysis by gas chromatography..61... [Pg.237]

After reduction and surface characterization, the iron sample was moved to the reactor and brought to the reaction conditions (7 atm, 3 1 H2 C0, 540 K). Once the reactor temperature, gas flow and pressure were stabilized ( 10 min.) the catalytic activity and selectivity were monitored by on-line gas chromatography. As previously reported, the iron powder exhibited an induction period in which the catalytic activity increased with time. The catalyst reached steady state activity after approximately 4 hours on line. This induction period is believed to be the result of a competition for surface carbon between bulk carbide formation and hydrocarbon synthesis.(6,9) Steady state synthesis is reached only after the surface region of the catalyst is fully carbided. [Pg.127]

Oxidation of thiophene and its derivatives was studied using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), t-butyl-hydroperoxide and Ti-Beta redox molecular sieve as selective oxidation catalysts. A new reaction pathway was discovered and investigated using C-13 NMR, GC, GC-MS, HPLC, ion chromatography, and XANES. The thiophene oxidized to thiophene-sesquioxide [3a,4,7,7a-tetrahydro-4,7-epithiobenzo[b]-thiophene 1,1.8-trioxide] and the sesquioxide oxidized mostly to sulfate. 2-Methyl-thiophene and 2,5 dimethylthiophene also oxidized to sulfate and sulfone products. The Benzothiophene oxidation product was sulfone. This proposed new reaction pathway is different from prior literature, which reported the formation of thiophene 1,1-dioxide (sulfone ) as a stable oxidation product... [Pg.263]
