The phase transfer catalyzed alkylation reaction of dodecyl phenyl glycidyl ether (DPGE) with hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) was studied as a mechanistic model for the general PTC reaction with cellulose ethers. In this way, the most effective phase transfer catalysts and optimum reaction concentrations could be identified. As a model cellulose ether, CELLOSIZE HEC11 was chosen, and the phase transfer catalysts chosen for evaluation were aqueous solutions of choline hydroxide, tetramethyl-, tetrabutyl-, tetrahexyl-, and benzyltrimethylammonium hydroxides. The molar A/HEC ratio (molar ratio of alkali to HEC) used was 0.50, the diluent to HEC (D/HEC) weight ratio was 7.4, and the reaction diluent was aqueous /-butyl alcohol. Because some of the quaternary ammonium hydroxide charges would be accompanied by large additions of water, the initial water content of the diluent was adjusted so that the final diluent composition would be about 14.4% water in /-butyl alcohol. The results of these experiments are summarized in Table 2. [Pg.33]

The complex hydrate structure, 1.67 choline hydroxide-tetra-n-propyl-ammonium fluoride 30-33H2O (space group = R-3, a = 12.533, c = 90.525 A) was discovered by Udachin and Ripmeester (1999b). It should be noted that the tetra-n-propylammonium salt will not form a hydrate on its own (Dyadin et al., 1988), even though other tetra-alkylammonium salts will form a variety of hydrate structures. Similar to structures II, H, and IV, this complex structure consists of stacked sequences of layers, CABBCAABCCABBCAAB. That is,... [Pg.68]

When the hydroxide salt is available (for example choline hydroxide is a readily available form of the choline cation), it is very straightforward to react the hydroxide with the acid of the desired anion in water. As long as the resultant ionic liquid can be separated into an organic phase, it is usually straightforward to remove the HX by-product by washing. [Pg.367]

The new, and currently unnamed, structure consists of alternating stacks of structure II and structure H hydrates. It has been synthesized by crystallizing choline hydroxide with tetra-n-propylammonium fluoride from aqueous solution. [Pg.1850]

Kantam et al. investigated the selective oxidation of various alcohols into their corresponding aldehydes and ketones by ruthenium species stabilized on the nanocrystalline magnesium oxide (NAP-MgO) by the incorporation of choline hydroxide, a basic ionic liquid, in excellent yields [45]. Their procedure was simple, efficient, and environmentally benign, and the catalyst could be used for four cycles with almost consistent activity (Scheme 14.42). [Pg.382]

Ru ions are distributed on the outer surface by a combination of strong electrostatic interaction and coordination between choline hydroxide of the surface functionalized CHNAP-MgO and Ru. ... [Pg.383]

Air Products and Chemicals have proposed a process for the synthesis of betaine from choline hydroxide H0CH2CH2N(CH3)30H without production of amine halocarboxylate contaminants [101]. An aqueous solution of choline hydroxide at 78 °C under atmospheric oxygen over a 5 % Pd/C catalyst yielded the acid with a selectivity of 87 % at 89 % conversion. [Pg.501]
