Cyclopropane derivatives have been prepared using alkenes, cm-dihalides, and copper. This is a convenient and useful procedure, e.g. cis-cyclo-octene was converted into bicyclo[6,l,0]nonane (77%) and into a mixture of endo- and cxo-9-methoxy-carbonylbicyclo[6,l,0]nonanes (71 % exo. endo = 1.3 1) using di-iodomethane and methyl dibromoacetate, respectively. An improved procedure for the conversion of alkenes into cyclopropanols uses lithium 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidide and 2-chloroethyl chloromethyl ether, e.g. cycloheptene was converted into the 2-chloro-ethyl ether of bicyclo[5,l,0]octan-8-ol (62% exo.endo = 1.8 1). ... [Pg.223]

Cydopropanols. This new carbenoid reaction has been extended to a synthesis of cyclopropanols by use of /S-chloroethyl chloromethyl ether as the carbenoid precursor. The final step involves cleavage of a /S-chloroethyl ether with n-butyllithium, a reaction first used by Schollkopf. ... [Pg.111]

Widespread chlorine-containing polymers would include, 1) stable molding material for practical use such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyvinylidene chloride and poly(epichlorohydrin)(PECH) and, 2) reactive polymers capable to introduce additional functional groups via their active chlorines such as chloromethyl polystyrene, poly (3-chloroethyl vinyl-ether) and poly (vinyl chloroacetate). While the latter, especially the chloromethyl polystyrene, has been widely used recently for the synthesis of variety of functional polymers, we should like to talk in this article about the chemical modification of the former, mainly of PVC and PECH, which was developed in our laboratory. [Pg.41]

Diffiuex investigated a synthesis of cyclic poly(vinyl ether) using cationic polymerization [26,28]. The reaction process is depicted in Fig. 9. They studied on the living cationic polymerization of 2-chloroethyl vinyl ether (CEVE) initiated with the HI adduct of 4-(vinylbenzyloxy)butyl vinyl ether prepared by reacting chloromethyl styrene with sodium salt of 4-hydroxy-butyl vinyl ether in THF at 80 °C. By the cationic polymerization of CEVE, o /o-hetcrofunclional linear polymer precursor of cyclic poly(CEVE) was produced. The MWDs of the polymers were unimodal and very narrow (< 1.2),... [Pg.132]

Bis(2-chloroisopropyl)ether exhibited moderately toxic and carcinogenic actions in test animals. The acute inhalation toxicity of this compound is considerably lower than those of bis(chloromethyl)ether and bis (chloroethyl)ether. Exposure to its vapors can cause irritation of the eyes and upper respiratory tract. Inhalation of 700 ppm of this compound in air for 5 hours proved fatal to rats. [Pg.431]
