Some whole coals in southwest Guizhou province, China (Xingren county) have up to 32 000 mg kg-1 of arsenic (Dai et al., 2005 Belkin, 1998 Ren et al., 1999). Although these coals are primarily responsible for the arsenic poisoning in the province, they are very localized (Dai et al., 2005), 128 (Dai, Zeng and Sun, 2006). Dai et al. (2005) actually found that 71 whole-seam coals from the western portion of the province contained no more than 11 mg kg-1 of arsenic, which is lower than many other Chinese and American coals (Table 3.22). [Pg.189]

The use of locally mined, high-arsenic (>100 ppm) coals has caused arsenic poisoning in several villages in Guizhou Province, China (Fig. 17.2 Zhou et al, 1993). Although coal has been produced and used in this area for 100 years, only with the increase in population and subsequent deforestation have some villages and... [Pg.402]

The main cause of acid rain in China is the industrial and domestic combustion of coal. Many of the furnaces have short chimney stacks and have minimal controls. The content of sulfur varies between different regions. In Beijing, the sulfur content of coal is circa 1 %, whereas in Guizhou province in the south it is between 3 and 5%. [Pg.79]

In the Guizhou Province in southwest China, local coal with an extremely high arsenic content (up to 3.5%) is used for cooking. Chili peppers dried over open coal-burning stoves contained > 500 mg As kg , compared with normal As levels < 1 mg kg . Similar levels were also found in other tainted foods and kitchen dust, whereas As in drinking water in this area does not appear to be an important contamination factor (Finkelman et al. 1999). [Pg.1336]

Arsenic poisoning from food ingestion is rare, but has been documented. In some regions of Guizhou Province in southwestern China, certain food items (such as corn and chili pepper) are dried over open fires fueled with high-arsenic coal. Chili peppers dried over the coal fires absorb 500 pg/g arsenic on average. Consumption of arsenic-contaminated foods causes chronic arsenic poisoning (33). [Pg.96]
