The square cell is convenient for a model of water because water is quadrivalent in a hydrogen-bonded network (Figure 3.2). Each face of a cell can model the presence of a lone-pair orbital on an oxygen atom or a hydrogen atom. Kier and Cheng have adopted this platform in studies of water and solution phenomena [5]. In most of those studies, the faces of a cell modeling water were undifferentiated, that is no distinction was made as to which face was a lone pair and which was a hydrogen atom. The reactivity of each water cell was modeled as a consequence of a uniform distribution of structural features around the cell.

Several brevetoxins have been examined for their respective abilities to competitively displace tritiated brevetoxin PbTx-3 from its specific site of action in brain synaptosomes. Analysis of IC q values revealed no marked differences in the displacing abilities between any of the type-1 toxins, and similarly there was no apparent difference between displacing abilities of PbTx-1 or -7, both type-2 toxins. Although some specific details require correlation, a gross comparison indicates that sodium channels in brain are similar in the systems examined. In the system studied most extensively, the rat brain synaptosome, t-test analysis revealed no significant differences between PbTx-2 and PbTx-3 IC q, or between PbTx-1 and PbTx-7 IC q, but statistically significant differences were found between the two classes (P<0.01) (5). Of much greater relevance in micro reactors are rectangular channels, which were the subject of a study by Cheng et al. [110], among others. They solved the Navier-Stokes equation for channel cross-sections with an aspect ratio between 0.5 and 5 and Dean numbers between 5 and 715 using a finite-difference method. The vortex patterns obtained as a result of their computations are depicted in Figure 2.20 for two different Dean numbers. 

Figure 33.2 shows results obtained by studies of electrochemical noise for the corrosion behavior of carbon steel A516-70 in carbonate solutions with and without NaCl as an activator (Cheng et al., 2000). It can be seen that in ordinary carbonate solution the fluctuations of potential of a test electrode and the fluctuations of current flowing between a pair of identical electrodes are small. Added NaCl causes a drastic increase in intensity of the electrochemical noise. The PDS plots (Fig. 33.3) differ accordingly.

As we stated above, there is a risk involved in the use of the Cheng-Prusoff relationships for SAR studies, as it is possible that structural alterations of the lead analogues could change the inhibition modality. This can be check from time to time for compounds that represent the greatest structural excursions from the lead molecule. Additionally compounds that are destined for progression into cellular and animal models should have their inhibition modality and affinity confirmed by running the more comprehensive studies discussed in Section 5.3.

In a recent study, the antiproliferative effect of different carotenoids, including (3-carotene, lycopene and lutein, on PCNA and cyclin Dl expression in human KB cells have been studied. The results indicate that carotenoids suppressed cell growth by acting as inhibitors of the expressions of PCNA and cyclin Dl, although in a different extent (Cheng et al., 2007). On the other hand, (3-carotene was able to induce a cell cycle delay in G2/M phase by decreasing the expression of cyclin A in human colon adenocarcinoma cells (Palozza et al., 2002a).
