The periodic table (Figure 1.1) has been called the chemist s cheat sheet because of the amount of information it provides. Look at the square that has the letters Ca in it. The first letter for an element is always capitalized, and the second letter, if there is one, is lowercase. Notice that there are two numbers in the square. The smaller of the two is the number of protons (the atomic number). It is also equal to the number of electrons. The larger number in each square in the periodic table is the mass number of the element (the sum of the protons and neutrons). For our purposes, this mass number should be rounded to the nearest whole number. For example, the larger number in the block for Br (bromine) is 79.9, and we will round this off to 80. [Pg.3]

Perhaps the most interesting thing about the Periodic Table of Elements is how much information is hidden in it. To the untrained eye, the periodic table appears to only show the elemental symbols, elemental names, atomic numbers, and atomic masses. However, someone who knows a bit more chemistry can squeeze much more information out of the same table. You will learn to use the periodic table to check your electron configurations, orbital notations, and Lewis dot notations. You will also learn to use the periodic table to check many relative properties of the elements, such as reactivity, electronegativity, and metallic character. It is certainly in your best interest to learn as much about the periodic table as possible, because you are allowed to make use of it on many exams and quizzes. Memorizing those symbols is incredibly useful. But you don t have to do it.
