Rising sign

For self development or medical (let the herb(s) be the same as the ascendant), fortify the herb(s) to the planet of your rising sign and make the nature of the herb(s) be in opposition to the planet ruling the 6th house. Strengthen the sick part of the body with herb(s) in harmony. 

These three chapters cover the basics. Chapter 1 briefly discusses the Sun, the Moon, the planets, the rising sign, and the 12 houses. The planets aren t the only essential components of your chart. The Ascendant or rising sign — the sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth — is equally important. It refers to your mask or persona — the face that you show the world. It also marks the start of the 12 houses. 

For those people whose Sun signs and rising signs are identical, the surface and the substance are the same. For everyone else, what you see isn t necessarily what you get. 

To determine your rising sign, you need to know the time of your birth. When you have that, turn to Chapter 3, which gives you a rough estimate of your rising sign. Then go to Chapter 11 for an interpretation. 

Figuring out the sign that was rising over the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth is the hardest part of casting a chart, but it s essential because the Ascendant or rising sign represents the part of you that other people see (and sense) first.

Although this method for estimating the rising sign works for Nicole Kidman, it s by no means a perfect technique. Often, precise calculations don t square with the results of the table. One reason is that the Earth revolves around the Sun at a tilt. As a result, some signs (like Gemini) take longer to rise over the horizon than others (like Pisces). So the two-hour blocks I divided the day into are artificially equal. 

Once you have identified your rising sign, your troubles are over. If you haven t already done so, go to the Cheat Sheet and make a copy of the blank chart.

But their rising signs (see Chapter 11) aren t the same, and neither are their house placements. How much difference would that make ... 

It would make a world of difference. One child, bom with Gemini rising, Mercury on the Ascendant, and the Sun in the first house, is Candy Barr, the platinum-haired stripper who died in 2005. The other, born with Cancer rising, Pluto on the Ascendant, and the Sun in the twelfth house, is the Dalai Lama. This stark difference suggests how crucial the rising sign and house placements can be. They re as important as sign placements.
