Data for such a direct comparison have been pubhshed elsewhere (13), along with a complete description of the tests. A summary of the results is shown in Figure 8, where the conversion efficiency for each of the square channel substrates is plotted against the conversion efficiency for each of the sinusoidal channel substrates, for the peirticular FTP test portion and for each of the three measured gases (HC, CO, and NOx). Here, only the latter part of the first test cycle (bag IB), all of the second cycle (bag 2), and only the latter part of the third test cycle (bag 3B) are included in the comparison. The term channel has a fairly specific meaning in the literature of excitable membranes and membrane transport [ 1 ]. It means a simple site of permeation with too high a conductance to be a carrier [2 4]. A pure carrier combines with its substrate on one side of the membrane. The site of combination moves to the other side of the membrane and the carrier dissociates from its substrate. This definition of carrier allows for both rotational carriers and diffusional carriers. Channels are usually thought of as pores or fixed passages in the membrane through which the ions (or channel substrates) move. [Pg.107]

Importantly, microfabrication using sacrificial cores is a versatile technique. First, there are no limitations in the size or flatness of the channel substrate, since no bonding is involved. Townsend et al. (1989) bas studied directional couplers made from poly-4BCMU spun film deposited on a patterned with two channels substrate. At 1.064 Mm operation wavelength they observed nonlinear transmission and switching from one channel to another one both due to a fast (ps) electronic and slow thermal nonlinearities.
